A Heart's Danger by Colleen Coble - featured on savingsinseconds.com

I read this book in a hurry because I wanted to send it off in a package for my grandmother.  I love to send her books, which helps her to pass the days and keep her mind sharp. I earn free books through Tyndale Rewards (join here — it’s free!) and send her my review books. She loves these sweet Christian romance novels, and this one will sure spice things up a bit!  A Heart’s Danger gives us a more lively view of the Native American tribes that surround the Campbell clan in this series.  While the previous two books in the Journey of the Heart series  had fairly tame storylines, this one was powerfully dark.  In fact, the mood is even reflected in this stunning book cover!  [Read more…]

Take the time to read the Journey of the Heart series - book 2 is A Heart's Obsession. Savingsinseconds.com

For all those times that you wished you had time to read a book, this one is for you! The Journey of the Heart by Colleen Coble has been serialized into six small novellas.  A Heart’s Obsession (Journey of the Heart)is the second in the series. Click here for book one’s review!

My biggest recommendation for this book series is —> DON’T READ THE BOOK SUMMARY!!  Each title is so short that it’s difficult to give a proper review without also giving an improper spoiler.  The book summary completely gives away every single thing that happens in these short 100 pages.  So, heed my advice and just open to the first page!   [Read more…]

What to read this weekend - Beyond the Ashes #LitfuseReads savingsinseconds.com

As I read more historical fiction novels that take place around the early 20th century, I learn so much!  In Beyond the Ashes, there was such a feeling of being there that I couldn’t help but pursue my own research about the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Then, I had to know more about early medical practices in the turn of the century.  Matters of etiquette and society’s graces were abundant in the story as well.  Although our home is far from prim and proper, the elegance in the story made me want to use a linen napkin or some such nonsense. The tense stirrings between Ruby and Gerald reminded me of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, with all the formality and stiff small talk.   [Read more…]

What to read this weekend – Two Roads Home, One Last Thing, Hearts Made Whole

My sister had some extra time to read this summer, so she carried home a parcel of books to enjoy! Here are her thoughts on these three dramatic novels. Thanks for your review, Allison!

Each of these books led the reader on a journey closer to God and reminded us about the importance of relying on Him in the midst of difficulties. Each book was inspirational, interesting, and relaxing.

Two Roads Home

Two Roads Home by Deborah Ramsey

In Two Roads Home, Corrine and Jesse had come to that place in marriage where a couple still loves each other, but are stuck in a pattern of complacency and restlessness in their relationship. The years of creating and enjoying their abundant upper-middle class lifestyle are gone and they have come to a place where more of their lives are lived out of habit rather than appreciation. On My Bookshelf: The Journey Of Josephine Cain by Nancy Moser

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

The post-Civil War era has become more interesting to me lately due to the books I’ve been reading.  The Journey of Josephine Cain was tempting to read all weekend long; I found myself choosing it over any other task.  My full sink of dishes can attest to that fact!  The beginning of the story opens with the assassination of President Lincoln, then the book continues through the building of the Transcontinental Railroad.  I’ve never been on a “real” train before, unless the trains at Tweetsie and Dollywood count.  Reading The Journey of Josephine Cain helped me to visualize the incredibly difficult manual labor that such a project required.   [Read more…]

Ordinary Graces by Lucinda Secrest McDowell Blog Tour

Disclosure: I received this title as part of a book tour. Opinions shared are mine.

Remember when I told  you about Dwelling Places?  The same author, Lucinda Secrest McDowell, takes readers on a journey of the heart in her recently released devotional.  As of the past few years, announcing a “word of the year” has been the big trend for New Year’s Day.  Ordinary Graces takes a similar approach, but makes the word fun last all year ’round. What to read this weekend + a title to watch for

Disclosure: I received these books to review. Post may contain affiliate links; opinions shared are mine.

With school starting on Monday (yes, it’s true! August 3!), I feel the pressure of the finite summer break. This week I read no less than 8 books, trying to satiate my yearning for fiction. There’s also a new book on my radar that I’ve got high hopes for!  If you’re wondering what to read this weekend, consider one of these titles.
#AnEmberInTheAshes

Although An Ember in the Ashes released in April 2015, this new world hasn’t made it onto my bookshelf yet.  It sounds like something my students will love, so I’m promising myself a little time to enjoy it once school is underway.  With comparisons to Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, and an author who is likened to Harry Potter’s J. K. Rowling, An Ember in the Ashes has a lot buzz surrounding it right now. [Read more…]

My obsession with things in sets

Disclosure: I received this book to review. The post contains affiliate links; opinions shared are mine.

When I love something, I want them in sets.  Are you that way?   I guess my mentality is, if ONE is good, MORE would be better!   For example, let’s start with shoes.  You can’t have a Tieks collection with only one pair.  So now that I’ve tried one pair, I really must have another.  In every shade, perhaps.  My husband’s head got whiplash when he saw me looking, and then I told him how much $$$.  My friend asked me if they were worth it, and at first I thought not….but when I realize how much I wear them, my mind is swayed.  And since this post is about SETS, it’s very important to have a set, not a pair.  Very different things.   I feel that way about books, too.
