The story picks up where we left off, with Dan and Gin enjoying the start of a beautiful relationship. The wedding for Cody and Raine is just around the corner, and Cody’s mom Evie feels a bit like a third wheel no matter which way she turned. She wasn’t my favorite character from Dandelion Field, so I was pleased to see her character grow up a little bit in this book. Through the new people she meets, Evie really stretches out of her comfort zone and learns to live a different life. As she gained new skills, her confidence grew. Isn’t that how it is with most of us? Author Kathryn Springer did a great job of developing the characters for The Hearts We Mend.

One of my favorite characters in this story was Maggie McLain. Her vision for a garden tickled my mind; I am the same way. I’ve dreamed of growing a community garden so that hungry families can choose delicious, fresh garden goodies for their dinner tables. The story also featured a cute little girl named Lily, whose antics were an adorable distraction from the romantic tension. Part of what caught me off guard was how “young” the characters were. Evie, Dan, and Gin are near my age (40) but seemed so much younger in many ways.

Although I read Dandelion Field and knew the characters going into The Hearts We Mend, I don’t think it’s a must-do. You could really catch up within the first few chapters. Overall, this is a solid second book in the Banister Falls series. Definitely check it out! One lucky reader will win a copy of The Hearts We Mend in the Lucky Leprechaun giveaway hop. The contest is open to US readers ages 18+. Void where prohibited by law. Good luck!
