Don’t be afraid to garden your way this spring!  No matter what kind of outdoor space you have, you can grow food for your family on it.  Here are some of my favorite ways to make the most of home gardens.

Consider containers if your land is limited.  I’ve used EarthBoxes for years and love them.  We’ve tried them on our deck, patio, and out in the driveway. They’ve been successful every single place.  This year, I’ve had my eye on the Garden Tower 2 (pictured above).  The fact that it has its own composting tube really appeals to me — no wasted kitchen scraps!  It’s definitely space efficient, too.  I’ve got my fingers crossed for this one; maybe for my birthday, my husband will surprise me!

Pick plants your family will eat!  My daughter loves butternut squash, so we grow a lot of that.  We base entire meals around our homegrown tomatoes…nothing beats that.  YUM.  I love zucchini and squash, so we have several plants in different stages of growth throughout the summer.  Don’t be afraid to try some fruits such as strawberries and blueberries, too.  If you grow the plants you know you’ll enjoy, the garden will be a wonderful source of joy while providing food for your family.

Start with plants instead of seeds if your time is short.  I used to order packets upon packets of $2+ seeds.  Those require time to start, thin, and acclimate to outdoor soil.  Since spring is a busy time at school, it’s much easier for me to purchase established plants and pop them in the ground once the danger of frost has passed.  In the end, it’s more cost-effective for me, too, since I don’t have hundreds of wasted seeds.

One lucky reader will win a $10 gift card – Paypal or Amazon – delivered through email. The giveaway ends 4/1 and is open to worldwide readers ages 18+. Void where prohibited by law. Good luck!
