Foretold and Echo Moon by Laura Spinella

Two snow days in a row equals reading time!  I enjoyed the surprise break from school by indulging in these two books that have been sitting on my shelf, calling my name.

I struggled with my rating for this one. On one hand, the paranormal elements were better than Ghost Gifts. I appreciated that the weird sexy scenes weren’t in Foretold. On the other hand, there were lots of strange fillers thrown into the mix. Aubrey’s love-triangle issues got so tiresome. It seemed to me that she should understand how her partner felt. After all, the whole I-am-committed-but-I-like-you-too scenario should have triggered some deja vu.

The addition of Pete was really brilliant. He added a lot to the story line in a completely different way than I expected. I work with middle schoolers every day, so I saw Pete as one of my students. It really impacted my empathy toward him, and toward Aubrey as a mom.

Compared to Ghost Gifts, the mystery in Foretold was a lot more convoluted and hard to figure out. I loved the ending and can’t wait to start reading Echo Moon (already bought it when I ordered Foretold.) Finished this book in less than 24 hours — staying up until 3 am to finish it!

I read this book right after Foretold and Ghost Gifts, so the family’s story was fresh in my mind. Though you could probably read Echo Moon as a standalone, I’m glad I read these in order. It helped to know the relevance of specific events and details.

This story was very different from the first 2 in the series. I liked the way Aubrey interacted with ghosts through her gift, so it was a big change to see her son Pete resenting his abilities. While it’s a solid 4 stars for me, it wasn’t my favorite of the trilogy. A lot of the plot was based on Pete’s angsty bad attitude. Some basic threads from the earlier books were tied together nicely at the end of Echo Moon, which I appreciated. These books have been on my wishlist for a while, and I’m glad that I finally got to read them.

There are still many unanswered questions that I’d love to see in a novella (or five.) For example, exactly what happened when Aubrey got those scars?

As mentioned, I’d love to see more books in this series.  Ghost stories are my favorite, and this was just about perfection for me.
