Fall Break getaway — Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC

Fall Getaway - Biltmore Estate Asheville, NC savingsinseconds.com

This summer when my grandmother and cousin visited, we had a little time on our hands. We spent most of it watching the entire Downton Abbey series.  Of course, that warranted a trip to the Biltmore Estate!  It was the closest thing we have to the Abbey, after all.  [Read more…]

Some summer entertainment in Asheville

This post contains affiliate links.  We had a gift certificate to spend at Mayfel’s.

Today we took a short road trip over the Blue Ridge Mountains into Asheville, NC.  We enjoyed the beautiful weather while looking at the gorgeous mountain views.  The skies were absolutely blue and had the prettiest, puffiest clouds ever.  When we arrived in Asheville drove around for several minutes looking for a parking spot.   It reminded me of the National Lampoon European Vacation when the family drives around Big Ben and Parliament for hours.  At least while we were stopped at traffic lights I could watch the hackey sack players in the small park for some summer entertainment.  Finally my husband remembered a little parking area that we used in the past so we circled around once again.  I noticed this beautiful church and had to take a picture of it!

Tricities Tuesday: Mayfel’s restaurant in Asheville, NC

Okay, my Tricities posts are expanding.  There’s just so much I want to share with you about this wonderful area in the heart of the Appalachia Mountains!   This past weekend, we visited Asheville, NC to attend the Yo Gabba Gabba show.  We arrived a bit early and had some time to spare after we picked up our tickets.   Eat at the concession stand while we had the heart of Asheville to ourselves?!  No way!

We decided to take a stroll downtown to see what we could muster up for supper.  We started out at a wonderful crepe place, but my kids weren’t interested. How they could pass up Nutella-and-strawberry crepes, I’ll never know.  We passed a multitude of chocolate shops and bakeries before we finally found Mayfel’s on College Street.

Alright, disclaimer time.  I feel that I must tell you, when you go to Mayfel’s, you’d better show up hungry. Because they are very generous with the portions.  But if you don’t have much of an appetite, don’t let it stop you….just grab a dessert instead.  The beignets looked AMAZING.  There was a layer cake (such an understatement) in the case when we walked in that literally called out my name.  It did!!   [Read more…]

Get the Sillies Out! #YoGabbaGabba Live show in Asheville, NC

If you have a little person living in your house who is age 4 or under, chances are you’ve heard of Yo Gabba Gabba.   And if you haven’t, you should check it out.  Because everyone needs to get the sillies out!

I

This fun show has been a favorite in our house for several years.  Getting to attend the live show was like Christmas all over again in February.    The show we attended was in downtown Asheville, NC which is one of my favorite towns. (Check out my upcoming post about it on Tuesday 2/19.)     When the show started, it was exciting to be a part of it.  The opening was really similar to the beginning of a regular episode, except this time the audience was part of the show!!  My son absolutely LOVED that.   Almost immediately, DJ Lance had us all on our feet dancing and singing along.   I am completely convinced that DJ Lance keeps so trim from all that dancing because we were exhausted by the third song.  [Read more…]

One Day at Disney @DisneyBooks @BSteeleAVL @RobertIger @oaksteel

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Opinions shared are mine.

For all the years I’ve been blogging, my Someday Dream has been to work with Disney. Our family holds our Disney vacation memories so dear. My son learned to walk at The Grand Floridian; my daughter discovered how deeply music touched her heart while we walked in Norway at Epcot. Disney is where my husband is finally able to relax and enjoy himself, far away from the daily worries and stress of work and life. For now, getting to share A Day at Disney is the closest thing I can do that resembles a Disney partnership!

My kids love their collection of Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom cards!

Recently we discovered that our favorite Ryan’s Buffet location is closed.  Apparently, it was a sudden closure.  We’d traveled to Greeneville, TN to eat there and do some back-to-school shopping.  Thankfully, there’s a Ryan’s restaurant in Asheville, NC so we will plan to visit that one soon.  Family Night at Ovation Brands’ portfolio of restaurants – Old Country Buffet, Ryan’s, Hometown Buffet, Country Buffet – and Furr’s Fresh Buffet are fun to enjoy with the whole clan!  This month, they’re rolling out a new Family Night promotion featuring the popular children’s TV series, StoryBots. The StoryBots are curious little creatures who live beneath our screens, offering a world of learning and fun for kids, parents, and teachers.

The French Market Creperie in downtown Knoxville, TN #crepes #frenchmarketcreperie

A French breakfast in Knoxville, TN

This week I had the opportunity to go to a training in Knoxville, TN.  The hotel where I stayed, the Hilton Knoxville, was located right downtown near Market Square.  It was the perfect location to enjoy the city’s charm!  While the hotel housed a Starbucks and full-service restaurant, I wanted to try something completely different. The French Market Creperie caught my eye on TripAdvisor, and I was delighted that it was just steps away from the hotel!
