An Appalachian transplant’s list of books

Disclosure: I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Post contains affiliate links; opinions shared are mine.

If you’ve visited Appalachia, you know the way that the mountains whisper. The mist steals into your soul, and won’t let go until you return. I moved to this area in 1993 and it became my home. My babies were born here; they’re Tennessee natives now. On weekends we enjoy hiking in the hills, and playing in the creeks that abound in this beautiful countryside. The local sights of nature are incredible. For example, one spring evening I saw this triple rainbow above the mountains — it was spectacular, and my cell phone photo does not do it justice!

The Proposal at Siesta Key by @ShelleySGray - book review at savingsinseconds.com

So when you’re wondering what to read this weekend, you know you can always find some ideas at Savings in Seconds!  I’ve been reading at least a couple of books per day. Such bliss!  The Proposal at Siesta Key was as sweet as the cover, just as you might expect from author Shelley Shepard Gray.  This story was based in the Pinecraft area of Sarasota, Florida. I didn’t realize that it is a real place, so I especially enjoyed the author’s list of places to visit in the area! [Read more…]

There’s no place like home – Pal’s, Biltmore, and Bristol Motor Speedway

I love the little things that make Northeast Tennessee home. Our family is really a homebody-type clan. We like to travel but don’t usually stay away for longer than a couple of days. It’s always nice to get back in our own beds or sit on our own couch because, as they say, there’s no place like home. When we do go out of town, I like to see the places that make our new scenery unique. While an Olive Garden dinner is fine, it’s also available nearly anywhere in the country. When we travel I want to find something that I can’t get anywhere else.

So when YOU come to Northeast TN, here are some things that you might see!

When I see Pal's, I know I'm home. savingsinseconds.com

NC residents: What are your kids doing this summer?

Let’s talk about summer activities.    Soon school will be out (yay!) and then we’ll be having those daily “What are we doing today?” moments (not so yay).  What are your kids doing this summer? That honeymoon period of sleeping in and laying around the house all day gets old pretty quickly with kids.  If you work outside the home, you may be concerned with childcare arrangements throughout the summer months.  If you’re home in the summer, the kids will expect a full itinerary of activities and entertainment.  Before you know it, they’ll be asking “Can we…..(fill in with expensive, exhausting outings).”   When Carolina Summer Camps asked me to share their site with you, I knew it would be of interest to you busy moms and dads.     Carolina Summer Camps is an excellent resource for parents who live in North Carolina.   Organized by city and then by themes, this website has resources for parents in Asheville, Charlotte, Durham, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Winston-Salem.    Summer camp was always one of my favorite weeks of the summer.   I went every year and looked forward to catching up with old friends.  It was also a good opportunity for me to learn important skills like responsibility, working with others, and enjoying the outdoors.  If your child hasn’t had this experience yet, why not consider it this summer?

Yo Gabba Gabba Live coming to East Tennessee!

Yo Gabba Gabba Live show on savingsinseconds.com

Attending a live music performance or drama is a great way to introduce your young child to the magic of the stage.  Children can learn important things like the use of voice and expression to get feelings across.  Even small things like learning the appropriate times to clap, cheer, and even cry are such vital lessons that are a natural part of live performances.  If your child has only been exposed to television shows, consider getting tickets to the Yo Gabba Gabba Live! tour that is coming around the country in 2013.  I’m excited that we get to attend the show in Asheville this month.  My son asks about it EVERY DAY.  [Read more…]
