isclosure: I received a starter set; opinions shared are mine.

You probably heard about the big wildfires that have been raging through East Tennessee. This week, we had the relief of some wonderfully rainy days to quench our dry earth.  During those storms, the wind blew down a few trees and scattered pine cones everywhere.  Before long, winter will be here and the birds will be needing some easy-to-find nourishment.  It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost a year since I posted about homemade suet cakes. It’s a delightful way to bring feathered friends to your backyard.  Think about the people on your Christmas list.  Is there an outdoorsman?  An elderly shut-in? A mother with small children who would enjoy having an easy activity to do with the kids?  You Do It Suet makes a wonderful gift!  The starter kit sets you up with a silicone mold and simple recipe selection.  You Do It Suet #giveaway

Suet is a quick source of energy for birds.  We have several woodpeckers in our backyard, and they love to devour our homemade suet.  The least expensive suet I’ve found in store was $0.75.  I can make a cake of suet for just a few pennies using grease from cooked ground beef and adding some pantry ingredients, including peanut butter and cornmeal.  We usually have birdseed on hand, too, and I add that to the mix. I didn’t realize, though, that there are so many suet recipes online!

We have a garbage disposal in our sink. My husband is vigilant about keeping grease out of it.  Making suet is a win-win situation. You can take something you would normally throw out and use it to help the local wildlife!  It’s a big bonus that the silicone mold is dishwasher safe. I was reading the FAQ’s and learned that bacteria cannot live in fat. See, I knew I needed to keep my muffin top for a reason!
