You might not know it to look at me, but I was once a big fan of professional wrestling. Back in the day, my brother, stepdad, and I sat around the TV every Saturday morning to watch the clotheslines, body slams, and other crazy stunts that the wrestlers pulled. My stepdad even took us to a match once! The book Wrestling for My Life by Shawn Michaels will be a blast from the past for fans of the older WWE shows. More than that, though, it’s a vivid depiction of the way that God can change any heart. Whether you’re a WWE follower or not, get in line for this ride!
Wrestling fans will love the terminology used in the book. When I was a kid, it was a while before I realized that the shows were merely staged. Michaels describes some of the ways he made his fans “react,” and that’s exactly how it seems. In this book, Shawn Michaels gives his account of a life he led….then his second life. I love that he sees it as a new life, because that’s what Jesus offers. The book actually spends more time describing his life since he really started walking alongside Jesus. I loved knowing that he took his faith into the heart of the WWE, changed his relationships, and committed to his faith. The pages overflow with this godly man’s love for his family. The photos of his career and family are also touching. My favorite is the one on the very last page. You can see the peace and contentment on his face. Throughout the book, Michaels continuously calls out for God to receive the glory for the things He has done. I love that! As a celebrity, he could bask in his success. Instead, he chooses to use his light to bring God glory.
Wrestling for My Life isn’t just a memoir about a professional wrestler. While it does bring back some of the old names that I remembered with a smile, it is truly more about sharing Christ with everyone. Whether it’s in the grocery store, at Disney World, or in a wrestling ring, Christians are called to bring God’s message to the world. Shawn Michaels did just that. Would you like to read this book? I love a good Christian autobiography in which I get to learn from another’s journey. This book looks like so much more than just a wrestler’s biography. I am not a fan of professional wrestling and have absolutely no idea who Shawn Michaels is!
In the book Michaels reveals what it is like to be a man of faith in this unusual world and shares insights for all of us.
