World Vision

When I was in college, several of us in the dorm sponsored a child in Africa. We received letters from him and got to learn about his education, home life, and culture. Later, in a women’s group I joined at church, we adopted another child through World Vision. Her frequent letters reminded us how valuable our donations were. While we only pitched in a few dollars or even quarters during our monthly meetings, that money really amounted to something in the life of that child. World Vision can turn $1 into $1.30 worth of food, clothing, shelter, and supplies for a child. Amazing, right?

Introduce your family to the World Vision sponsorship program, and you might be surprised how receptive they are.  Challenge your kids to contribute part of their allowance, or perhaps collect spare change to donate each month.  Share some of the staggering facts about poverty around the world with your kids to help them understand, and appreciate, their blessings.  Here are some statistics provided by World Vision to help you bring this challenge home.

  • According to World Vision’s 2015 Food Assistance Report, 1 in 6 children – more than 1.4 million kids – are dangerously underweight because they lack access to adequate food and nutritional assistance. Demonstrate this statistic to your children by using beads or other counters to represent this number in their classroom of 24.
  • Approximately 1.3 billion people worldwide live on $1.25 each day, according to World Vision.  Could your family eat on a budget of $1.25 per family member per day?  Ask your kids to figure out how much food that would provide.
  • Show your children how sponsoring a child through World Vision allows that long-distance “family member” to receive nutrition, medication, and education.  Children learn to grow their own food and create sustainable living environments right in their own communities.
