What to wear UNDER my outfit?

Disclosure: I received samples for this review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

The daily stress of finding an outfit (that fits) to wear is starting to grate on me.  There was a time when each day presented a fun opportunity to put together a little something and run out to meet my friends, feeling young and great.  Things have gotten a little squishy since those days and it’s just not as exciting to pull on a cute lingerie set to feel pretty under my clothes.  In fact, most days I’d rather just wear some sweats and moan about my pear-shaped figure.  Figuring out what to wear UNDER my outfit just adds another element of stress to my already busy morning.

The Sisters aren’t as pretty as they used to be either, thanks to nursing two children and the force of gravity.  I’ve never really had much on top but appreciated what was there.  These days, I just don’t want wires poking into my girls.  After choosing an outfit that still holds in my muffin top, my underwear is an afterthought.  I try to find the least restrictive bra and call it quits.

When I heard about the Genie bra, I thought that I’d give it a try.  Normally I watch the As-Seen-On-TV commercials and roll my eyes, thinking that things can’t be as good as they claim.  A comfortable bra seemed like an oxymoron, something too good to be true. My fear was that everything would get smashed like a pancake, as if I were wearing a sports bra.   Genie Bra does resemble a sports bra with no snaps/clasps or underwire.  I was pleasantly surprised by the shape of the bra.  There’s a feminine shape to the design so that it still provides attractive support, just in a more comfortable way.  Now, I’m not well-endowed so I was fine with my same bra size.  I’m not sure that the Genie bra would provide enough support for a woman who needs a little more lift.  As for the price, Genie bra is amazing.  From what I can tell, it’s cheaper on Amazon than in the stores (3-pack for $18.99–ships free with Prime8.99 ).  The pads inside are removable although I’m not really sure why.  The downfall of the removable pads is they remove themselves in the washer.  I didn’t realize this until my son walked out wearing the rogue bra pad on his head like a yarmulke.   The pads also shift around in the bra but it only takes a second to re-position them.  I liked the lace-top Milana bras I received because they do double-duty as a camisole when I’m wearing a v-neck or low cut shirt.  Overall, these are a comfortable and affordable option for someone who needs light to moderate support.

I also received the Cami Shaper to review.  As I said, there is some leftover luggage that my children left behind when they exited my body.  It often presents itself as a nice fat bulge when I wear a more form-fitting top.  Not pretty.  The Cami Shaper is meant to smooth down all that bulge while providing a bra-like support system.  It also minimizes the layers that need to be worn, since you can skip the separate wearing separate bra, cami, and shaper at once.  It’s actually a comfortable shaper which I never thought could exist. I’d suggest sizing up with this product. You might think that sizing up would negate the benefits of the shaper, but I found that I probably needed one size larger.  I received the right size according to my weight; however, it rides up at the bottom in an uncomfortable way.   It would be more ideal if the shaper was just a little longer in the torso.  I did like the feel of the support, which was tight without making it hard to breathe.  There are no underwires (thank GOD!!!)  For someone who doesn’t have as much going on in the waist area, it would probably be perfect.  It just wasn’t the right product for me.  I did like that the bra area has a shapely figure rather than just a flat sports-bra type bodice.  The shaper is also made of a very thick, almost restrictive fabric.  There are times when I really need that type of support and don’t want to wear a separate shaper.

The final product I tried was the super comfortable leggings.  On the weekends, the last thing I want to deal with is a tight pair of jeans.  The days of a cute butt are gone; I just want to lounge on the couch and wear my leggings.  If I have to run out to Walmart, I don’t want to go through a hassle of changing my pants to do so.  The Slim & Tone Leggings sound too good to be true.  While I didn’t find that they really made me look slimmer (after all, they’re not magic pants) they really are comfortable and do provide a bit of tightness around the thighs that other leggings don’t match.  I feel I must make the Public Service Announcement and remind you that leggings are not pants, people.  You really should wear something long enough to cover your stuff, like a tunic or dress, to save everyone the embarrassment of having to see everything you’ve got.  For weekend errands and doing the chores, these leggings really cannot be beat.  I’m tempted to buy them for every day of the week.

Are you into shapewear that makes you feel comfortable, or do you think it needs to be poking you with wires to be working?

  1. I’m not into shapewear at all! I left that all behind in the 60’s!! Now those girdles and shapers were killers!! From what you are saying I would not be happy with the bra–I need a bit more support.

  2. I wear legging shapewear with dresses in the winter. I have a hard time finding some that won’t roll down at the waist when I sit down. Thanks for a great review.

  3. I do not need a ton of support, but I do need it to be comfy.

  4. Julie Wood says

I have heard of the Genie Bra and wondered if it really is comfortable, and it looks like they really are comfy to wear. I need a good supportive bra and it really is hard to find any. But, I would love to try out this bra!

  5. Christina Howell says

I haven’t done a lot of shapewear, but sometimes I am tempted. I do need a good bra because my current ones are awful. This bra sounds good!

  6. That does sound comfy, and I love reducing layers whenever possible. The lace is cute.

  7. Sometimes I am tempted to get some shapewear, but then I remember that I came by this body honestly. I created and nurtured life, and this body is the result of that.

  8. These all sound great. I once tried on shapewear at Filene’s, and it was extremely uncomfortable. I also had a terrible time getting it off! After that, I’ve avoided shapewear like poison, although when I hear about these products, I’d want to try them. Especially when you have nice things you won’t wear because of what you need under them, but won’t wear them, so they sit in the closet!
