We recently moved into our new house and didn’t have room for our big bookshelves (sob) in our living room. This could have been my husband’s master plan all along. The books were starting to take over the world. So in the new house, my books have been banished from sight; they now hide in my nightstand, bathroom cabinets, and inside the kitchen drawers. The one non-negotiable for me — the kids’ books. I like to have those right out in the open so that the children can always select something to read. We repurposed this window bench into a bookshelf for the nook between the bedrooms. It’s a great place to sit and enjoy a little read! One of our recent finds was The Thing About Yetis, and it’s perfect for reading with the littles.

There’s nothing scary or mysterious about the Yetis in this book. The illustrations are absolutely adorable, and you’ve just got to smile at the yeti antics. The Thing About Yetis has all the makings of a classic! If you’re a teacher, there are LOTS of ways to incorporate this book into a Language Arts lesson. I’ve already started considering how I can use it in my 6th grade classroom. First of all, there’s no real reference to a holiday, so hooray for that dodged bullet. Though they’re 11 years old, the students in my class still enjoy having a story read aloud, and this is the perfect one for a winter day. The imagery of childhood is beautifully described in this sweet book. The glowing lights of fireflies, sound of crickets, warm summer days….it’s all just lovely. Even if you’re not using it for an educational purpose, you’ll want to have The Thing About Yetis on your bookshelf, too.
