This summer our family visited the Dixie Stampede, where Native American dancers performed an interpretative dance to represent the early Americas. It was a beautiful sight to watch the dancers stage a mock hunt with live buffalo and a musical dance around a bonfire. In The Shadow Soul, we get a brief picture of what life might have been like in the Arapajo culture. Jinji not only believes in the spirits, she’s almost stalked by them. Hence the title “Shadow Soul.” Normally I don’t get scared easily but this book did freak me out just a little bit!

The Shadow Soul was an interesting mix of Native American culture and settler’s stories. It also incorporated other legends, such as The Great Flood (although it was a different version than I learned.) I also loved the way that supernatural powers were part of the characters, not just something they learned. The story is very sad, though, and it made my heart a little heavier. This was especially true with the big cliffhanger at the end of the story! This was the first book I’ve read from Kaitlyn Davis but I’d definitely read more.
