Aside from the Twilight saga, reading about supernatural beings never really interested me. After that series it seemed like the book market was flooded with books about vampires or some other type of mythical creatures. For a while, many of the books I read were about aliens. Recently it seems that the characters tend to be angels. I’ve read no fewer than four angel books in the past month or so, and the trend disturbs me a bit. Until now, I hadn’t really considered angels to be bad beings. The term “fallen angel” made me think of Lucifer, but I didn’t stop to think about his counterparts. Thinking about fallen angels makes me a bit ill. The Girl With Broken Wings series I started this week threatened to be much like the others, but to my relief it was more of a sci-fi book.

Maya is described as an angel but she’s more like a genetically enhanced superhuman. By using genetically modified bone marrow, black market scientists have created a race of people who show extraordinary abilities. The downside of this creature is having to feed off the energy of humans. Now, that’s a bit disturbing too. I don’t like any books that require people to feed off of people. Maya tries to show restraint but it’s clear that the situation is difficult for her. Of the other characters, her brother Gabe was my favorite. He reminded me a little of Mikey, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, with his bubbly personality and childlike faith.

Much time is devoted to the descriptions of Maya’s struggles, her brothers’ determination to fight, and the quest to get rid of the bad guys. While the story seemed a bit stunted, especially at the end, the series has potential. I’m interested to see what future books have in store for Maya and her family.

The intellectual challenge of college and the warm embrace of a serious boyfriend have given Maya the wings she needs to break away from her bookish and shy reserve. Her ideal life comes crashing down when she and her boyfriend are accosted by a stranger. A stranger with glowing hands.

Maya’s boyfriend is killed. She is kidnapped. Changed.

A rescue comes, but not soon enough.

Maya’s senses sharpen, her body becomes strong and agile, and she develops the ability to visually see the emotions of those around her as colorful auras…beautiful auras…tempting auras.

And then there’s the song…

Now, Maya must struggle to control the murderous appetite that fuels her new abilities, accept her altered condition and learn to trust two vigilante half-brothers she never knew she had. As she joins the battle against a secret network of powerful and destructive beings that call themselves “Angels”, Maya vows to find and destroy the one who changed her.

On the bright side, at least Maya’s oldest half-brother has stopped trying to kill her.

I recently reread your post on Coping the second book and wanted to find this one. I’m with you and get chills from the idea of “bad angels.” Angels to me are beautiful and good. It’s hard to take in the aspect, but I like how this really features the bonding and trials in famil relationships. The last line does draw a lightheartedness that the rest of the excerpt does not. Glad he doesn’t want to kill her.
