Kids need to learn the valuable lesson that success doesn’t have anything to do with luck.  Hard work and dedication play such an important role in a child’s successful future!  Pretend play, books, and even simple discussions can help guide a child toward thinking about the future.  Asking, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” is a special way of saying, “I care about your future. Let’s think about it for a few minutes!”   This month’s Parragon Books prize pack encourages readers to reach for their dreams.

STEM is a huge buzzword in education today.  The acronym stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields of learning.

Women Who Rocked Medicine  features women who made significant contributions to medical research.  I enjoyed this book very much, and can’t wait to share it with my students.  The text introduces readers to technical vocabulary, and each page contains color photographs to support the information.  I really liked the “WHOA!” fun facts tab on the side of each page.  Sidebar information reminds early readers to use the whole page.

Similarly, the book Women Who Rocked Space features amazing female role models for those interested in space studies. To be honest, Sally Ride was the only woman I could have named prior to reading this book.   Women Who Rocked Space doesn’t focus just on astronauts.  It also highlights space research, from comets to planets.  Did you wave at Saturn in 2017?  We did!

Both STEM books introduce these individuals with background information about their childhoods.  Kids will notice that things like puzzles and looking through a telescope can lead to a successful future career!  My only complaint with these Discovery books is that they still focus on gender-specific individuals.  I’m not a self-proclaimed feminist by any means, but titles like ‘Women Who…’ perpetuate the idea that women should be differentiated from men, especially within these male-dominant fields of science.  It’s certainly meant in a positive way with these books, but I think kids should see that ALL humans have a role in the fields of medicine and space research.

Dream You’ll Be opens with a charming illustrated quilt cover.  The title has a bit of fun with word play, as the story encourages kids to literally dream about their dreams.   I loved seeing unexpected careers in this book, such as a beekeeper and football player.  While reading, kids can enjoy looking at each themed page to look for details that relate to that career.  Some of the professions are perhaps not what a parent would hope for their child….for example, pirate?  However, it’s easy to spin that conversation into career paths that involve life on the high seas!  When my children were young, they loved these sweet rhyming stories.  Such books were part of our nightly routine.  I could see Dream You’ll Be as a favorite on any young child’s shelf!

There’s a local Fresh Market store here that has a weekly meal special.  For just $20 or $25, you can grab their Little Meal Deal that contains everything you need for a family dinner.  It’s all organized right in the front of the store, too, making it simple to run in and grab the goods in just a couple of minutes.  Their Noodle Bowl meal is one of our family favorites!  So when Bountiful Bowls arrived, I was all smiles!

It’s about time to get the garden ready for spring, and I can see so many of these recipes becoming regulars on our menu.  The Summer Abundance Salad, Black Rice & Pomegranate Bowl, and Salmon Burrito Bowl all had my mouth watering.  With full-color photography for each recipe, you’ll have bookmarked pages galore.  At first, I was a bit intimidated by the recipes, which have about 15 ingredients per recipe.  However, most of the recipes call for an assortment of fresh vegetables and fruits, which makes the ingredient list look complicated when it’s really simple.  The recipe instructions tend to be complete in 5 or 6 steps, but again, these steps aren’t overly difficult.  So don’t be put off by the apparently long recipes.  They’re just very thorough in descriptions, but the recipes aren’t super hard to recreate.

One lucky Savings in Seconds reader will win all 4 books thanks to Parragon.  To enter, visit the form below. The giveaway is open to US readers ages 18+. Void where prohibited by law.
