My 6th grade students get a big kick out of funny chapter titles. I can only imagine the giggles I’d hear from “Pee in the Fridge” and “Somebody Invented Underwear?” Since my son got in trouble at school for talking about pee masquerading as lemonade, he might not laugh at that first one, though.
The characters in this story really do crack me up. The kids concern themselves with such important issues, like Roger Federer’s ability to play tennis without yanking at his undies, El Nino, and Book of the Month Club packages. They’re just normal kids, the kind who still want to see what happens when you combine Mentos with soda. The illustrations in One-Third Nerd are cute as can be. This will appeal to readers who enjoy seeing a related cartoons with their books.
One-Third Nerd reminds me of the good ol’ books that make me miss being a kid. Elementary teachers would love to have this on their classroom bookshelves or as a read aloud!

A funny, fast-paced, and heartfelt story from the Newbery Honor-winning author of the Al Capone series.
Fifth grade is not for amateurs, according to Liam. Luckily, he knows that being more than one-third nerd is not cool. Liam lives in the Bay area near San Francisco with his mom and two younger sisters. Dakota is fascinated by science and has a big personality but struggles to make friends; Izzy, a child with Down syndrome, makes friends easily and notices things that go past everyone else. Dad lives across town, but he’s over a lot. And then there’s Cupcake, their lovable German shepherd, who guards their basement apartment.
Recently, Cupcake has a problem–she’s peeing in the house. The kids need to make enough money to take her to the vet before their landlord upstairs finds out. And Mom and Dad have said if Cupcake doesn’t stop, they will find her a new home. But the kids will never let Cupcake go. Can they save her?
About Gennifer:
Choldenko is best known for her Tales from Alcatraz series, which has sold more than 2 million copies. Book #1: Al Capone Does My Shirts was a Newbery Honor Book and the recipient of twenty other awards. Book #4: Al Capone Throws Me a Curve is due out in 2018. BookPage said of her most recent novel, Chasing Secrets: “Choldenko’s ability to research obscure yet intriguing topics is uncanny, and as she did with the popular Al Capone trilogy she turns a tough topic into a high interest read … a compelling work of historical fiction.” Gennifer lives with her loyal husband and naughty dog in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Gennifer, I love the sounds of your book! I love that it has some real life aspects, so many kids could relate to, worrying about pets they love and having a dad across town but who visits and that even the kids who have something like Down Syndrome have a lot going for them too and how kids who seem to have a lot going for them, also have weaker areas to work on too.
I LOVE that you used silly humor because anyone who really knows kids, know how much they love silliness and laughter and especially this age group, they can get exceptionally giggly and I know if I am lucky enough to win, a happy, silly loving, loves to giggle 11 yr. old Cloey will love this book. Thank you for generously sponsoring this giveaway. It’s fun to have a chance! 🙂
Those chapter titles will definitely appeal to kids!
My daughter would enjoy this fun read.
Love this author’s work. Good luck with this new one.
I thought this author looked familiar! I absolutely adored the Tales From Alcatraz series. This one looks like it is going to be lots of fun as well. 🙂
