Disclosure: I received this software free for review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

Did you ever put something off because you knew it would hurt?  Perhaps a dentist appointment, getting a bikini wax, or maybe starting a new diet?  Well, I’ve tried several debt-reduction programs with varying success.  In one of the online forums I belong to, I read about the You Need A Budget program and wondered what all this fuss was about.  I kept seeing “YNAB” mentioned and doggone it, I had to be part of it.  It’s kind of like my friend Marsha — she says when she sees a line, she figures she is supposed to be in it.  So after checking out the YNAB program, I thought it was time to get a real-time budget going on.  My little envelope system has long gone by the wayside.  With online checking, I’m sort of out-of-sight-out-of-mind; the checkbook ledger is in the pits of my purse. And really, who has time?  Well, I need to make time because it’s ridiculous (and scandalous) to waste the lion’s share of our income on restaurant meals like we do.

So here we go.  Ripping off the band-aid.

I set up this example for you to see (because let’s face it, no one wants to see my REAL budget.  Including me.)   The first rule in YNAB is to give every dollar a job.  Have a purpose for that dollar.  You can set up the categories as you wish; there are preset lines for you to play with as well.   When you start, plan to work on this for at least 30 minutes or so in order to set up your budgeted spending for the first month.  I found over $2000 that we didn’t have budgeted; in my head, that’s always been blow money that we somehow burned through in a week or two.  So now I’m much more aware of those dollars!  YNAB example

YNAB also encourages you to plan ahead for expenses.  For example, you know that Christmas comes in December.  Every year.  There is no variance in that fact.  So how much have you saved for it?  Will you be panicked on December 24, worrying about how much you’ve already spent and thinking about paying it off through March?  YNAB helps you to avoid crisis mode by building up that budgeted balance in advance.   I love that!!  This is a great way to plan ahead for birthdays, tag renewal for my car, and all those other expenses that are in the back of my mind but always come as a surprise to my bank statement.  Any money that you left in the budget over the month ends up rolling over to the next month.  In my case, I plan to budget it down to a zero balance in order to more quickly resolve our debt.  Why have $2000 sitting around if it can be paying down a credit card?   You Need A Budget -- I've got the program for you!! Reviewed on savingsinseconds.com

The YNAB program is setup to sync to your Cloud, so you can access your budget from anywhere.  So all those times that I set up a dinky Excel spreadsheet on my computer?  Total flop because I could only get to it when I was at home, exhausted, in the middle of the night.  No budgeting is going to happen at that time of day.  With YNAB, I can check out the real-time status of my spending.  It’s going to take a while to build up the habit of checking in when I spend, but I’m willing to do that.  If you have a spouse, you can link their phone/device right to the budget as well.  It does not link to your bank account, so there’s no concern about someone hacking into your financial information.

It’s super helpful that YNAB offers a free full feature 34-day trial!  There’s absolutely no credit card required; you just get started.  If you like it, you can upgrade to the paid version which is a one-time $60 fee.  For those who purchased the software over 3 years ago, there is a fee to upgrade but for anyone who purchased after December 26, 2011 the upgrade is free. To me, it’s a huge bonus to know that I can likely receive free updates as the program improves.    You can also take advantage of the free online classes at any time.  Okay, so once you get set up on the program, you just need to take a few seconds whenever you’re shopping and update your account.  Take the time do look at the Walkthrough so you know what’s what.  YNAB is extremely easy to manage.  I like that there’s a place to put notes on the expenditure, too, so I can keep track of the excuses reasons I spent money.

Even if you’re not in debt, YNAB is a wonderful tool.  It would be great for business owners to track spending, bloggers to keep up with sponsorships and such, even for college students stay on budget, too.  You can gift YNAB to anyone!

What are your biggest budget struggles?  Would YNAB help you stay on top of your financial goals?  Check back in August because YNAB is sponsoring a giveaway, too!!

  1. We’ve always put aside for big purchases. For example – after we paid off our truck the hubby kept making the payment into a savings account so that when he bought the next car he paid cash for it.

  2. I’m going to have to give this a try for the trial period and see if it helps us. I think that tracking stuff makes a huge difference.

  3. I have this software and it really is a great concept but the problem is that my husband is commission based and my blog income is so erratic that we can’t predict what the next paycheck will bring, which means giving every dollar a job is difficult. So I do struggle with it. Again, I love the concept and how easy it is to use and I think it helps you see where your money is going.

    • Hi Kimberly,
I’m one of the devs here at YNAB, and I just wanted to let you know that the whole YNAB system is set up specifically to deal with variable income. Can I suggest you check out this video, which will you show you how you can best use YNAB to deal with this situation?

  4. I will definitely be telling my daughter about YNAB! She has just gotten married and isn’t doing so well budgeting on her own.

  5. This looks awesome! Budgeting is so very important and this would help so much!

  6. Wow, my husband and I probably need this. I like to cheat a bit and not really keep track of all of my money, but I probably should be better about it.

  7. Sounds like an interesting system. It isn’t something we could use at present unfortunately.

  8. Jenna Wood says

I really can connect with ‘give every dollar a job,’ budgetting has been important since I moved out on my own at 15- there have been some bumps but a strong budget has always got me back on track!

  9. That looks like an amazing program!!! Something my husband and I could benefit from. I love the zero budget too, we follow Dave Ramsey and this would tie in perfectly

  10. What a great program to help those that need to put together a budget. I have a budget but could use this to streamline it a bit more.

  11. Sherry Compton says

Great idea and set up. A good way to get people on track and to realize how important it is to budget. Each month when I get my bank statements, I go over them and figure out exactly where I am. I always try to keep some “safe” money held back. It isn’t even written in the checkbook just my extra in case we need it.

  12. My husband does a budget for us each month to keep us on track for expenses. It has really helped in regards to eating out and seeing whether or not our efforts are making a difference.

  13. My husband would love this

  14. This is such a great program! We’ll have to try this.

This looks like a great program. I would love to try it. I think all families could use some help getting their budget and finances in order. We all get in over our heads from time to time and I would love to figure out how not to do that!

  16. Nicole Dz says

I really need to manage a budget. I love how this is synced to your Cloud, so you can access your budget from anywhere. Very cool!

  17. I’ve only used YNAB for a few days, but it MAKES SENSE in a way other budget software never has. Fingers crossed for the giveaway!

  18. This would be an awesome tool for those who need an app to be accountable. Thanks!

  19. marnie ward says

We all need a little help and especially with our financial planning. I know from experience that when I try to come up wit a budget I either make to hard to follow or it just doesn’t”t work. This software and the YNAB assistance would be just what any family could and would need.

  20. Wow! Great article, you’ve really broken it down and made it easy to follow. I am so trying this. Thanks!

  21. My husband and I have been using YNAB for about a year now and it totally changed the way we spent our money! When we started using it we were missionaries on a college campus and we fundraised our entire salary! It was critical that we spend the money we received in the most responsible way possible! Now we are both working full time jobs and preparing for a baby. Because of YNAB we have been able to save enough money for me to stay home with our son for a while after he is born, save for emergencies, fully fund our health savings account, and much more! AND we always budget spending money for date nights and individual spending money each month! I cannot say enough good things about YNAB!

  22. My cousin was showing this app to me on her phone the other day. I love the way it works and how simple it is to use, but can’t swallow the upfront cost.
