National Geographic is a household name for most of us.  From the quality television programming to the iconic magazine, this familiar gold rectangle represents scientific expertise on a level for “real” people.  I love the way that National Geographic takes us to the secret lairs of lions, or the inner workings of a pond’s ecosystem, and somehow puts it on a level that mere humans can understand.  Even better, National Geographic Kids has a fabulous assortment of books and products that make learning fun for kids.  I’ve been using their publications for years, both in my classroom and in my home.  Stock your bookshelf with these fun titles that make you want to explore the outdoors!

Get Outside Creativity Book is going into my bag for church.   My son sits with our family for the worship service, and the “sitting” can be a bit tedious for a 6 year old.  This creativity book is ideal because it has so many activities that will keep him engaged.  Stickers and stencils are always a big hit!  Then, after church, we can take a walk around the neighborhood to experience some of the things he learned in the book.

Bird watching is a fun, free activity that can be really addictive.  I’m so excited that the Ultimate Explorer Field Guide: Birds is coming our way. It will be used by all members of our family.  Forget the 8-12 age range; I predict my husband will be the one who uses it the most!  This will be a great resource to help kids understand how scientists classify animals.  We have so many feathered friends who visit our multiple feeders constantly throughout the day.  The vivid colors in the book will really be helpful in identifying bird species.  I’m excited to teach my kids how to use the field guide so that we can take it with us when we make hiking trips to the mountains, or when we visit family in other parts of the country.

National Geographic board books hold honored positions on our home’s bookshelves.  Durable and kid-friendly, these books capture the eyes and mind.  The bright colors and amazingly detailed photographs just set the National Geographic books apart from other science books we own.  Look and Learn: Caterpillar to Butterfly follows a monarch butterfly throughout its life cycle.  Just last night, I ordered milkweed seeds and other pollinator favorites to plant in our backyard with the hopes of attracting some beautiful butterflies this spring and summer.  We’ll enjoy learning about the butterflies through the book, then experiencing the fascinating creatures firsthand.

Thanks to National Geographic for sending us this package!
