I’ve always loved to play with fonts and lettering.  Before the days of computer imaging, I experimented with various markers and pens to get the results I wanted.  When Fox Chapel Publishing offered me a copy of Lettering Workshop for Crafters, it was a great opportunity to learn some new font styles!

The book contains new-to-me styles, which is always fun to find.  I’m a teacher and often make my own classroom posters, so that’s a practical application of this skill.  Restaurants and storefronts often have hand-lettered signs at the entrance, too.  This workbook really works for anyone who likes to write!

The pages are set up with the entire alphabet on one page. This way, you can put a blank piece of paper next to the page while you work.  The first few line strokes are illustrated, too, so you’ll be able to transfer your skills to the other letters.

HINT:  You can TRACE the letters!

The book also gives coloring suggestions and shows how to shade letters to make a unique, one-of-a-kind look every time.  Some alphabets feature both upper and lowercase, while most are just uppercase. Once you have the hang of the style, though, you’ll easily adjust it to include numbers and symbols, too!

How to hand letter - different fonts

Over the summer, I enjoyed a girlfriend getaway with some of my college friends.  We had a blast in an Airbnb house in Nashville, and upon my return home  I ordered some magnets to send the girls.   I used the cute cut-out cards from the DaySpring sale and my favorite Flair pens. Using a different lettering style for each card and envelope made each one special.

Though this book says it’s for crafters, it is really great for anyone who enjoys handwriting.  Consider giving a copy to your favorite teens so they can decorate their notebooks, or to a teacher who likes to doodle.  I plan to keep this in my classroom so that early-finisher students can explore these techniques!
