Normally, furry creatures make me smile. I like seeing rabbits, deer, and other “pests” around our yard. Until they cause a problem, that is!
In this photo, you can see where a cute little chipmunk made his home under our retaining wall. This little guy has been living off my garden, and it’s time to stop. I don’t begrudge cute creatures from nibbling on lettuce, but for me it’s a sanitary issue. So it was time to take steps keep pests away from my yard – naturally!

1. Consider letting your cat/dog patrol the yard. We’ve noticed that having our dog around made a significant impact on the rabbit population in our yard. Squirrels and other animals keep a safe distance from the house, too, which has been helpful for our bird feeders! She might not look like it, but our dog is pretty fierce. When we adopted a stray cat, his regular presence in the backyard kept the birds from making messes on our patio. He definitely earned his keep!
2. Keep the vegetation neatly trimmed. While flowers can make a pretty backdrop in your yard, leaving them untended will provide shelter for unwanted pests. Regularly weed and trim the flower beds in your yard. You can also consider planting certain bulbs and flowers that will deter critters from your garden.
3. Turn to a natural spray, such as Eco Defense, to help create a barrier. Unlike other sprays, this one does not leave an unpleasant odor behind….that is, not to human noses! It’s so safe that it can even be used indoors. Because it’s 100% natural and organic, it can even be used on your skin. Eco Defense doesn’t hurt animals; it just deters them from your space. This is a terrific alternative to traditional toxic sprays. I use this around my retaining wall where little friends like the chipmunks reside, and it has been tremendously effective. We also spray it around the pool area to keep unwanted pests from taking a swim.
What natural methods have you used to keep unwanted pests from your yard?
Your backyard is beautiful, and what a cutie your dog is. May I ask her name? Small dogs are fierce and protective. Their yard is theirs and will often keep pests away. We have a small dog and our neighbors do, too. We have used methods of vinegar solutions, salt….different things work for different pests, but it is nice to also have eco sprays to try.
We call her Sweet Pea. She’s my sidekick, always at my feet!!
That’s like our little Missy! Very cute.
I live in a townhouse and don’t have a garden and don’t have to take care of the yard so I can enjoy a bunny or two hopping around.
These are some great tips. I love using diatomaceous earth for ants and other little pests with exoskeletons. It’s completely non-toxic, edible even and totally safe for pets! They even feed it to farm animals as a dewormer.
I don’t have problems with pests just yet, but it’s great to learn about products like this for when the time comes!
How about getting rid of flies in my house?
Finding ways to protect your garden without being inhumane can be so difficult! Fortunately for them, I do more to harm my own garden than they do!
I hate using any type of poison in m yard. We have kids, dogs and cats that I do not want to kill, but the bugs have been so bad this year. Flies, gnats and mosquitoes are everywhere, so these natural pest control methods could be useful.
