Historical fiction that plays out like a movie

Historical fiction has become a huge moneymaker for Hollywood in recent years.  Suddenly people have a renewed interest in stories from the past.  While my favorite period tends to be ancient history (probably because that’s the subject I teach) my husband is obsessed with anything Templar.  When I received Shakespeare and the Ships of Solomon for review, it was extremely hard not to hand my Knight the kindle and say, “You’ve gotta read this!!” because I knew he would take it away from me.  Instead, I’ll wait until the movie comes out.  Hint, hint Hollywood!

Post-War Treasure Hunt, Old World Secrets

In the fall of 1947, Will Shakespeare saw the world collapse around him. Shakespeare, a secret soldier for the Knights Templar, barely escapes the slaughter of his entire knighthood at the hands of a rogue militant arm of the Vatican in a small Montreal church.

With orders to escort Templar business associate Dorothy Wilkinson back to her home in Bermuda, Will must locate and rescue the most important secret treasure in human history before it is devoured by a hurricane in the watery caves beneath her father’s property.

The spiraling quest sends Will and Dorothy into uncovering dark secrets that make up the origins of the knighthood as they confront the traps and puzzles that masterfully protect the world’s most coveted treasure.

Shakespeare and the Ships of Solomon created a world in which the Templars live on.  So much history was relived within this book that I kept asking my guy, “Is this true?”  or “Did that really happen?”  In truth, I couldn’t tell fact from fiction.  The story was full of action while heavy on the history.  Somehow author Christopher Grey worked in so much legend that I was completely consumed with the idea that there might really be treasure on Oak Island, or that the secrets of the Templar might really live on.

There was a definite DaVinci Code feel in this book.  The balance of the male and female main characters came easily since both of them had strong personalities.  I could easily envision Will Shakespeare (the Templar knight) as a movie character, played by Jude Law or maybe Joaquin Phoenix.  Tom Hanks wouldn’t fit because Shakespeare has a bit of a potty mouth.  This book would reach so many audiences!  If you are a history fan, love suspense and action, and enjoy a bit of snarky romance, this might be just the book for you.

BIO:
Christopher Grey is an author of fiction focusing on conspiracy theories, secret societies and the occult. His special brand of storytelling dives into conspiracies and the occult from the point of view of the secret societies, attempting to dispel popular mistruths and paranoia prevalent in the mainstream.   Grey’s fascination with the secret world began when he was sixteen after a chance meeting with a conspiracy theorist in a coffee shop sometime in the 1990s. The conversation with this man led Grey on a lifelong scholarly endeavor to learn about secret societies and the occult from a skeptical and secular point of view.

Over the past 15 years, he has been involved in various fraternal societies and has sought to explore the undercurrents of human civilization–to uncover the hidden histories and the forces and patterns that have designed what society has become and to demystify the hidden forces in our society that, for so long, have been vilified and misunderstood.  Check out Grey’s blog for more information.

    • Hi Linda,

I want to know more about history but often feel confused, overwhelmed, and ….well bored at times. I love the idea of a book being filled with action and excitement while still having facts and legend thrown in.

  3. Dorothy Teel says

Thank you for this review, I like the post war Templar type of books and think it will be interesting to read about history, conspiracy theories, and how secret societies impacted our history, I hope that Will and Dorothy find the secret treasure they are looking for.
