Excerpt from A Draw of Kings

A hard knot of resolve formed in Errol’s midsection as the guards led him away from Adora. Benefice Dane remained with the princess, and the soldiers didn’t appear to be in the mood to provide information. Martin and Luis walked ahead of him, their feet barely clearing the ground before shuffling forward.

Errol coughed to clear his throat. “Where do you think they’re taking us?”

The butt of a spear in his back propelled him onto the granite floor. Errol rolled with the fall, came to his feet facing his antagonist.

A hint of a smile played around the guard’s mouth, suggesting a desire to strike again. “No talking.”

Errol rolled his shoulders, his hands grasping for a staff he didn’t have.

Most of the books I read are Christian fiction; however, I rarely read fantasy or sci-fi. For this tour, I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and give the Patrick Carr books a whirl. If you’re like me, do yourself a favor and break out of your regular genre mold. This imaginative world that Carr has created is beyond spectacular.  Thanks to Chapter by Chapter books, I was given the chance to read the first two books in the The Staff and the Sword series before reading A Draw of Kings.  I highly recommend starting with Books #1 and #2 since they help to set the stage for the third book.

Errol seems like a character who might not be the hero in everyday life.  In the first few pages of book 1, you might even wonder how he came to be a main character. By the third book, he became such a vivid person in my mind.  Errol is a beautiful symbol of the way God used Moses or the disciples to make a difference.  The entire series has that cool Middle Earth setting that is reminiscent of the classic Lord of the Rings and a little bit of Narnia.  In the third (and final) book, the tensions and suspense have built up so much that you won’t be able to stop reading.   Attention teachers–start this trilogy at the beginning of the year as a read aloud.  Your students will LOVE it!   I’d love to see this series created for TV so that everyone can enjoy them!  Click here to read the first 40 pages of the book.

A dangerous mission to free Errol succeeds, but the dangers facing the kingdom are mounting with every passing moment. The barrier has fallen, ferals are swarming toward the land, and their enemies draw near. Will the revelation of Illustra’s next true king come in time or will all be lost?

ABOUT Patrick W. Carr:

  Carr_Patrick

Patrick Carr was born on an Air Force base in West Germany at the height of the cold war. He has been told this was not his fault. As an Air Force brat, he experienced a change in locale every three years until his father retired to Tennessee. Patrick saw more of the world on his own through a varied and somewhat eclectic education and work history. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1984 and has worked as a draftsman at a nuclear plant, did design work for the Air Force, worked for a printing company, and consulted as an engineer. Patrick’s day gig for the last five years has been teaching high school math in Nashville, TN. He currently makes his home in Nashville with his wonderfully patient wife, Mary, and four sons he thinks are amazing: Patrick, Connor, Daniel, and Ethan. Sometime in the future he would like to be a jazz pianist. Patrick thinks writing about himself in the third person is kind of weird.
