Disclosure: I received a book to review. Opinions shared here are 100% mine.
High-interest picture books are great for beginning readers. My little guy is 5 years old and starting to be a pretty good reader. He loves books that have fun pictures and repetitive words. When we received Tipper Tells a Lie and Diggit Saves the Day, the only thing he noticed was the vehicles on the front! One lucky reader will receive both of these Building God’s Kingdom books from Thomas Nelson.
Tipper Tells a Lie is a hardcover board book. The pages are sturdy and glossy; no worries about getting these dirty. You can wipe it right off. My only concern is the title. I would have preferred to focus on the positive — maybe title it “Tipper Tells the Truth” to also highlight the potential for a meaningful alliteration. The story has great sound-words like “gurgle” and “wheeze” that make it fun for kids to participate in reading together. The honest message is presented right at the end, when the lesson is presented with “The Bible tells us….” This is a great way to start a conversation with my son about the importance of telling the truth. Tipper’s friends forgive him, of course, and they learn that friends stick together.
Digger Saves the Day is a really positive, warm-fuzzy-feeling kind of book. Every child likes to feel important and needed. This book acknowledges each person’s individual talents; it recognizes that God has a greater plan than we can perceive. Kids will appreciate what Diggit goes through in the story. I love how the scriptural value is embedded into the story rather than being separated at the end. It makes the biblical reference so much more meaningful.
