Like a made-for-TV movie, Unspoken starts out with the bored businessman who comes across the intriguing female. In the case of Unspoken, the intriguing female is Charlotte, and she’s full of mystery.  Bryce Bishop is a little bit too cool for words and I didn’t like him too much right off the bat.  I did admire his respect and trust in his employees, though.  As I read Unspoken it just seemed too contrived.  Clearly both Bryce and Charlotte were loved by their friends, which was a redeeming quality for me.  I also appreciated the way the secretive conspiracy that seemed to take place in the background.  That’s what held my interest in the end.

The book is rather thick and took me a while to get through.  It seemed to move quite slowly.  Full of benign details that are repeated over and over, the chapters dragged on and I was content to leaf through a few pages at a time.  For instance, I didn’t really want to know what Bryce tasted at breakfast or to hear three times in one paragraph how one of the characters felt about the other.   Once I finally committed to finishing Unspoken, it became clear that some of the areas I glossed over might have been important.  The behind-the-scenes issues with the characters were interesting to me.  Only later did I realize that they were introduced in Henderson’s other novels, so that made me wonder if this book would be better enjoyed after reading the first of the novels (it’s called Full Disclosure).

Every book appeals to different readers; that’s no secret. So for me, just because I didn’t totally love Unspoken doesn’t turn me away from Henderson’s other books.

Books fit different people’s tastes. It’s a good thing there are so many out there. 🙂 I know my niece likes Dee Henderson, but I don’t like when books get so wordy you get lost in the details or just feel like it’s repeating itself to take up space. Plus, it’s hard to get into a book if you don’t relate – or at least enjoy – the characters. I’m glad it didn’t turn you away completely. Happy reading!
