“Saving him meant saving her colony…”

Lyra Bryan has been saving people her whole life from a chick in the ventilation pipes to her mentally ill brother when his mind drifts back to Old Earth. She meets her match when she finds a gorgeous alien man aboard the arachnid ship. Captured after a failed attempt to save his people, his spirit is broken, craving only vengeance. To save her colony, Lyra must save his body and soul.

Lyra’s lifemate, Tauren, is jealous of her obsession with the alien man and will do anything in his power to break them apart. While they travel to the arachnid’s home world to defeat the mother brain once and for all, they must set aside their differences and work as a team. But, can Tauren be trusted?

Spiders give me the heebie jeebies.  The way they scuttle around, have those creepy orbs on their backs, roll things up in cocoons, all of it just makes me cringe.  When I agreed to review Alliance by Aubrie Dionne I must have overlooked the whole arachnid part of the summary.  It’s a good thing, too, because this turned out to be a very cool book!

Science fiction isn’t my usual go-to genre.  There are a few futuristic books that I liked such as The Host and These Broken Stars.  Alliance reminded me of These Broken Stars just a bit, since the characters are traveling in space in some gigantic ship.  Their lifestyle is a bit different, though, and it seemed more in tune with the way I imagine life on a spaceship.  Soy wafers as the meal of the day, no natural sunlight to warm my face, followed by a nap in a world of plastic and metal.  Lyra’s relationship with her brother Leo was very sweet in a Max and Ruby sort of way.  Since I haven’t read any of the prior books in this series, the world of her colony was completely foreign to me.  Once I picked up on what was going on, the story became more appealing to me.

I appreciated that this book had the typical teenager attitude with relatively clean language. There were a few swear words here and there but it wasn’t excessive.  The book had zero mention of bedroom scenes, other than references to wild hormones.  This was a book I would feel comfortable handing to my tween.  Lyra’s lifemate Tauren is jealous, as mentioned in the summary above.  His actions speak louder than his words in this book.  Reading this with my daughter would be a great way to bring up the topic of abusive boyfriends and how to handle relationships of that nature.

I just might have to go back and read the rest of the Paradise Reclaimed books now! Thanks to InkSpell Publishing for allowing me to review this book.
