Using jars makes our house cozy

There are some things that just seem so homey and cozy to me.  Quilts, candles, and a plate of freshly baked cookies are so welcoming at the end of a long work day.  Unfortunately those things don’t always welcome me because as soon as my feet cross the threshold I’m starting on dinner, making the  kids get homework finished, and generally going crazy until bedtime.  So the things that make me feel comfy have to be already set up when I get there.    Jars of all kinds are beautiful in my eyes, so I set them all around the house for various reasons.  I mix salad dressing in them.  I grow sprouts for salad.  We even use them to store change and hold coloring pencils.  While they’re fragile and maybe not very kid-friendly, they’re a whole lot prettier than using a plastic container.

On My Bookshelf: Food In Jars by Marisa McClellan

This week’s focus is gardening and preserving.  I received a copy of Food In Jars to review and it’s all I can look at these days.  We’ve been enjoying a lot of rain in the past few weeks which means area gardens are full of goodness just waiting to be enjoyed!  Over the weekend I noticed that the tomatoes still on the plants at Lowe’s are already beginning to ripen.  Wow!  Mine are not quite there yet but I’m anticipating the loveliness very soon.  Having an abundance of garden goodness translates into the need for preserving the extra.  That’s why I want to share this great book with you.  Food In Jars is a treat for the imagination. I’ve been following the blog for months now. Author Marisa McClellan makes it all seem so easy, the preserving of foods in cute little glass containers. The book Food in Jars (available from Running Press Books) is even better. The photos are so bright and big that I almost wanted to modgepodge them into my pantry.

Food In Jars almost has me ready to take the plunge into home canning. [Read more…]

How are you saving money on food right now?

Disclosure: Post contains my affiliate and referral links. If you make a purchase, I may earn commission. Opinions shared are mine.

Summers have always been the time when my family spends the most on groceries. Being out of school means we tend to go on little adventures and often stop at a fast food drive-thru along the way. Being home all day means we eat more often. Since we’ve also been home due to pandemic closures, the food budget has threatened to be explosive!

Our family doesn’t do well on meatless meals or skimpy menus. We’re big eaters. Here are some of the ways I’ve been saving money on groceries right now, despite the rising cost — and even low availability — of food.

High Cotton by Debby Mayne @GileadPublishing

Disclosure: I received a free copy of the book. Post contains affiliate links; I will earn commission if you make a purchase. Opinions shared are mine.

If you’ve never visited the South, you’re missing out on an entire way of life. The charming cover on High Cotton is a picture of such bliss.  Mason jars of iced tea (no sugar cubes, though….real sweet tea is made with sugar at the time of brewing!) sitting on a wooden picnic table, ready to be sipped and savored.  Sprigs of mint from a Southern lady’s kitchen garden grace lovely breezes with a fresh scent.  The inside of the book is just as much of a treasure. People still say “y’all” in these parts.  There are really people with names like Puddin’. One thing that Southerners have in common with the rest of the world?  We’re stuck with the family God gave us. [Read more…]

In the 1990s, my cousin introduced me to Christian music.  He was obsessed with rap at the time, so DC Talk was his favorite.  I preferred Jars of Clay and Twila Paris.  Our preferences didn’t matter, though.  The important thing was the encouragement we received from the uplifting lyrics.  To this day, I find contemporary Christian music to be important part of my worship.  When my Laura Story “Open Hands” CD arrived, we listened to it on the way to school.  We have a long commute, so we were able to hear almost all of the songs during that drive!  [Read more…]

Our family recently took a short trip to Charleston, SC for a few days.  We took the kids to one of our favorite gardens — Magnolia Plantation.  I’ve always loved the Spanish moss hanging from the trees.  It gives such a Gothic look to the place!  As we rode on the nature tram, the guide told us not to touch the Spanish moss because it is covered in tiny bugs.  That was news to me!  We’re now entering the summer season, which reminds me that bugs are going to be everywhere.  Mosquitoes have had more than their 15 minutes of fame recently, with the spread of the Ziko virus.   I have to hose myself down with bug spray to avoid swelling up like a balloon from all the “skeeter” bites. Thanks to the scientific folks at Orkin, we know a lot more about these pesky insects.  Test your knowledge and enter the giveaway!  [Read more…]
