What helps you hibernate in the winter?

I’m ready to hibernate for the winter. We live in an area that doesn’t often get snow, but when it comes you’ll know it. Any hint of snow on the weather report sends people running to the store to fill up on gas, milk, bread, and then they burrow in their homes to wait it out. For some reason, I also have a compulsion to make sure we have enough toilet paper stored in the cabinet. In my opinion, it’s much more important to have plenty of toilet paper than to have a fresh loaf of bread. Once we’re warm and cozy in the house, I welcome the snow. We snuggle up in blankets and watch hours of TV with zero guilt. I like to indulge in a hot drink like some Vanilla Caramel tea or a cup of cocoa.

This week a bag of Butterfinger Bites came in the mail and immediately the cocoa called its name. While my milk heated in the microwave, I chopped up one of the Butterfinger Bites. It flaked so easily that I really only had to shave it down with the edge of the knife. You could have the kids do this with a butter knife. We just used packaged cocoa mix, but you could go all out and make yours from scratch. Then just sprinkle the candy bits on top of the cocoa and stir. The pieces melted right away and gave the cocoa a delicious flavor. You could add more to suit your taste; I only wanted a hint of the Butterfingery goodness.

I tried Butterfinger Bites in my cocoa---delicious! savingsinseconds.com The next thing that’s on my list for a hibernating session is a soft blanket.  I caught a few ultra-soft plush blankets on sale at Kohl’s a couple of years ago and they’ve been the family favorites ever since.  Recently my husband was very ill and couldn’t get out of bed or sit anywhere but the recliner.  To help him feel a little more comforted, I bought him a snuggie.  Surprisingly we all absolutely love it, so I think I’ll get some for the kids for Christmas, too. There are some cute Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle snuggies at Walgreens!

All this talk of getting cozy in the wintertime makes me sleepy. What helps you hibernate in the winter?

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

  1. I’m originally from Wisconsin where we get lots of snow. We recently visited my parents there for a couple weeks and basically hibernated. In more favorable weather, I usually go shopping and to the library at least once. This time I went out only b/c I had to.

    My hibernation supplies are :
    . A bunch of DVD’s from the library and/or zines/books
    . Ingredients for hot chocolate/chai
    . Soup
    . A cuddly down throw
. My favorite pj’s — my apparel of choice when I’m home

  2. I sooo love hibernating and cocooning in the winter! It is tempting to move way north to have more of it! A snuggly blanket, a good book, and comfort food are basic requirements. Sometimes I like to bake if I think we won’t lose power (ie not an ice storm). As for the comfort food, homemade puddings, any potato dish, anything warm and filling!
