Tricities Tuesday: Supporting local businesses at the Farmer’s Market

While we were on spring break, the kids and I enjoyed a little outing to the Farmer’s Market.  It’s one of our favorite places to go.  Each of the kids get $2 to spend while we’re there. Usually they each purchase a drink and a little snack, but sometimes they’ll pool their money together to buy something bigger.  Our market is open twice per week, although the Wednesday market is usually smaller.  We also head out early in the morning when there isn’t a big crowd so we can enjoy browsing all of the tables. One thing I like about the Farmer’s Market is the chance to build relationships.  Knowing where our local produce comes from is a special connection.  Our family has favorites that we always visit…..there’s the pickle lady who makes the World’s Best Pickles (they’re actually called that.)   Another man is my source of delicious sweet onions for several months through the spring and summer.

At the market this week, we enjoyed one of our favorite treats — homemade popcorn from Sarah’s Kandy Kitchen.  My husband almost always buys a bag of caramel corn, but sometimes he’ll branch out and get the Butterfinger flavor.  There are always free samples available.  My daughter decided to spend her weekly allowance on a bag of Chocolate Chip….which is literally a concoction of chocolate and potato chips.  Oh my…..this is yummy.

The owner of Sarah’s Kandy Kitchen mentioned that she recently set up a table in the Mall at Johnson City.  Her efforts were rewarded with a huge following of new customers who wanted to buy homemade goods instead of buying something prepackaged at the store.  I’m in total agreement!   Every delicious variety  we’ve purchased from Sarah’s Kandy Kitchen has  been fresh and scrumptious.  A bag never makes it through the day at the Savings in Seconds house!  We also enjoy supporting local businesses.  If you’re at the Kingsport Famer’s Market, be sure to check out Sarah’s Kandy Kitchen.  She’ll take orders at her phone number, 423 276 0327.  She’s willing to try new recipes so if there’s a flavor you’d like to try, she’ll experiment for you!   You can also find her cooking things up on Facebook!  She recently took orders for Easter baskets which looked absolutely adorable.  She has so much more than popcorn going on over there!

Has there been a time when you wanted to reach a business owner and couldn’t find their number?  It’s happened to me in the past, usually with a direct-sales consultant.  I wish more people had a phone number to call or some other way to contact them if they have produce for sale.  Sarah’s Kandy Kitchen puts the phone number right on their label, so you can call if you run out and need more! It makes sense for a small business owner to have a dedicated phone number for their business.  With Grasshopper, any small business can get a local number from anywhere in the country at a totally reasonable rate. There are multiple plans available depending on the anticipated usage.  New customers can even get the first 30 days for free!  Local numbers are a great way to give a company that community feel.  If multiple numbers are necessary, that is easily accommodated in an account.   Plus, if a business already has an existing local number with another provider, Grasshopper makes it easy to port over the number. It is definitely the perfect service for any growing business!!  It’s also a great alternative to giving out your personal phone number when you’re a small business owner.

Do you enjoy visiting your local Farmer’s Market?  What are some of your favorite booths?

What flavor of candied popcorn would you look for at Sarah’s Kandy Kitchen?

One of my favorite activities to do with my grandson is take him to our local Farmer’s Market. I have been taking him since he was two, and he loves it. I have observed that if he is a part of choosing our foods, he is more likely to eat them.

I enjoy going to the farmers market the earlier you go the better chances of getting frresh home grown stuff, some vendors sell stuff from large produce companies so you have to be careful, but it is always a adventure. Just don’t get your heart set on a certain thing and be open to what is available when you go.. Good deals, good food and friendly people
