Yep, you read the title correctly. My Sweet Encounter With Death — kind of creepy, huh? Perfect for Halloween season, you might think!
My Sweet Encounter with Death is not a horror story. Instead, it’s an autobiography in which the author, Ana Christina, shares her near-death experience. I love to read stories like this because I’m just fascinated with the spiritual realm. The fact that we can’t see the other side doesn’t mean it’s not there. Books like Heaven Is For Real and 90 Minutes in Heaven are popular because people are truly interested in the faith-based supernatural world.
Unfortunately, My Sweet Enounter fell short of the mark for me. Most of the book chronicles the early adulthood, career path, and failed marriages the author sustained. The author’s writing style was choppy and sometimes hard to follow. I found myself getting annoyed with her bad life choices (one after another). She moved from one battered wife situation to another, exposing her children to psychological and physical danger. She was clearly a strong, intelligent woman. It frustrated me that she did not stand up on her own, taking care of her children without depending on a husband.
As much as I wanted to like this book, it’s not one that I can recommend. The actual NDE section was rather small compared to the rest of the story. I found myself wanting to skim through some of the repetitive chapters, and felt a sense of relief when the book was over. If you’re a big fan of NDE studies, you might find it interesting to read about the author’s experience. Otherwise, it’s not a must read.
