This week in April is always busy for me because both of my kids celebrate their birthdays. This year it’s a big one for both — one turns 13 and the other 18. Wow, where did the time go? Looking back, those days of little ones just flew by. I remember being so exhausted at the end of each day, just grateful that we somehow made it through the entire day and everyone was fed, bathed, and usually got where they were supposed to go. Mothering teens is so different!

For a few weeks now, it seemed like spring was fast-forwarding to summer. The temps were staying snugly in the 70s, and we had sunny days aplenty. The spinach and lettuce that I planted in March are now tall enough to flutter in the breeze, and we enjoyed the first radishes with last night’s stirfry! Tonight, though, we are supposed to get snow. SNOW! Luckily, I still got to enjoy thinking about locally sourced foods and homegrown goodness through the movie Farm to Fork to Love!

Though DNA testing has been around for a while, I still find it totally fascinating. It’s amazing that scientists can determine lineage and other details based on their genetics. In the book Not Your Child by Lis Angus, one mother becomes desperate for answers and depends on DNA testing to provide them.

Do you remember Dippin’ Dots? My kids always ask for those things when we see the little cart somewhere, and even though I don’t like those cold little beads, I usually give in. Over the weekend, my son went to an arcade with a friend. He brought home a little gift for me — a Dippin’ Dots squishy toy. Knowing how much he likes Dippin’ Dots made this even more of a treasure. That’s kind of how I felt when reading You Can Count on God by Max Lucado. These devotions are super short — just a double spread page — but they are so meaningful. Each one filled up my heart with joy!

I’ve long wanted to read a Toni Shiloh book, so I was excited to get the chance with In Search of a Prince. This book takes place primarily in Africa, which was a new setting for me. I enjoyed it very much!

We’re living in an unprecedented age of technology. Ironically, while it might seem like we are more connected than ever, it can also feel like we’re more disconnected than ever. In the classroom, I see this daily with my students. So many of them talk about feeling anxiety, and it’s evident that they crave interaction. I liked this new suspense from Kelly Irvin. The San Antonio setting was interesting because I recognized some of the places mentioned in the book.
