On My Bookshelf: A Home in Drayton Valley

A Home in Drayton Valley by Kim Vogel Sawyer was the first of her books that I’ve read.  It was one that I just couldn’t put down!  Historical fiction is my favorite genre, but until recently I’ve stuck with Renaissance era novels.  A Home in Drayton Valley is set in the 1880’s, centered around a family who is settling in the midwest.   The characters are vivid and meaningful from the start.  I felt a kinship with Mary, who struggles with an illness that is slowly stealing away with her life.  Mary worries that she will not be alive to see her children grow and be happy.  I could relate to her friend Tarsie, a young woman who works hard and yearns for friendship.  Tarsie has an extensive knowledge of natural cures and remedies, something that I’m interested in, too.  I could even find a connection with Joss, a man who wants something better but doesn’t know how to find it.   The story moves so quickly but is full of excitement.  This is a novel that just touched my heart.  It’s rather predictable but you know what?  Sometimes it’s nice to have a warm, fuzzy ending.   This book is best read when you have an afternoon to enjoy it.  The Christian message in A Home in Drayton Valley is pervasive yet subtle.  I love the way that prayers were woven into the story as a natural statement.   I’ll be looking for more books by Kim Vogel Sawyer.
