The 2022 seed catalogs have been arriving! It is utter joy to sit and peruse the catalogs with my pen in hand, looking for old favorites as well as new varieties to try. I’ve also subscribed to many seed company newsletters, which gets me some good bargains once in a while. I grabbed this great deal on herb seeds — $4 for 5 packs of seeds. Click here to snag it! I love planting herbs in containers right on my deck, then tucking in more herbs in the raised beds and planters around my garden.

Herb seeds like these are great to start indoors. I plan to get a head start on them using small pots in my kitchen, then placing them under grow lights.

Just like prices with everything else, seed prices have increased this year. I was shocked to find in one of my catalogs that some zucchini hybrids were $6 and $7…for 25 seeds in a packet. OUCH. I have some seeds left from last year, but love to try new varieties each year. I save seeds from some plants, but haven’t made an effort with squash because I like to pick them when they’re small. However, my husband says he doesn’t mind spending money on seeds. We save a LOT of money by growing at home, especially squash and zucchini which we eat every week during the summer months. So spending a bit on seeds is an investment that really pays off.

If you take the time to grow herbs, you can also enjoy the pollinators that will visit when the herbs flower. I’m always happy to see the butterflies and bees gorge on the pollen buffet in my garden.

What seeds are you planting this year? I can’t wait to hear!
