There are times when it’s tough to be a girl. I’m not talking about the “womanly change” or anything like that. I mean the raging hormones, the gossipy bickering between so-called friends, and the whole boy thing. Don’t let that get you down though.
When I received the My Name is Erin books to review, I was struck by their small size. These are discreet enough for your preteen to tuck in her backpack or purse. You never know when a girl might need to consult a book for help!

Erin understands the need for help.  Confident and strong as a teen, she recognized the need for godly women in her school.  She understood that girls battle all kinds of heartache and turmoil on a daily basis.  Erin offers a way for girls to express their girl power; she empowers girls to take a stand for what’s right.  The thing I love best about the My Name Is Erin books is that they’re completely down to earth.  They tackle the real grit of life and encourage strength.  As I read these books I just wanted to share them with my daughter.  And so readers, that’s what I suggest that you do with these books.  Consider purchasing two of the books so that you can read alongside your daughter.  Don’t plan to share the book, because your daughter might not feel free to record her thoughts on the journal pages.  That exercise is quite beneficial, I think, for helping girls to put their thoughts and feelings into words.  Instead, use these books as a backdrop for those tough conversations that a mom needs to have with her little girl.

If you’re a single dad, I’d definitely encourage you to purchase these books for your daughter.  There are plenty of books to help girls navigate the waters of the Kotex and first bras.  This book is for a whole different ballgame.  Girls need to know how to handle situations like temptation, sexual promiscuity, and peer pressure.  It’s tough even when you’ve got a supportive mom but if your daughter doesn’t have a female to confide in, these books can potentially be a big help.  At the very least it will open the door for your daughter to share her feelings with you.  Erin is like the big sister I’ve always wanted!

I think the My Name Is Erin books would make an excellent Christmas gift.  Stuff the stockings with something meaningful.  Choose these books that give your daughter a helping hand.

  5. What a wonderful series. It’s never easy growing up and I think it’s really hard in this internet age when anonymity can make people even crueler. It’s nice to have something a girl can hold in her hand and turn to for positive reinforcement.

  6. What a great read for young girls to identify with. I had both parents and would have loved some genuine insight, like this, to soak in myself.

  7. This is a great thing- I’ve never heard of this before. Great for girls- since it really is difficult being a girl lol:)

  8. I love that these books deal with the tough topics. It’s hard for girls in this society to decide to be “Nice”.

  9. Sherry Compton says

Growing up is hard both on kids and parents. Girls feel awkward and unsure. These books sound great and helpful.
