It used to be easy to earn free gift cards by doing surveys or collecting points through Swagbucks and MyPoints. These days, you can still find ways to get those freebies but it might take a little more creativity! I tend to hoard my gift cards in a little zippered pouch and use them when we’re trying to stick close to a budget. The treat is even more special when I’ve been limiting myself!
Here are some ways that gift cards have found their way to me!
CASHBACK APPS
There are lots of other apps that let you earn free gift cards. My favorite is ibotta; I use it nearly every time I shop. This app offers cash back rewards that you can redeem for gift cards (Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Applebee’s — just to name a few). You can also cash out for Paypal or Venmo. ibotta makes it easy to submit receipts for cash back; if you prefer to shop online, you can go through them the same way you would use ebates. I love that there are often “any brand” options. I even earn a few cents just for submitting a receipt.
LOYALTY PROGRAMS
Make sure you’re getting the most from the accounts you’re paying into! For example, if you’re a Verizon customer, don’t miss out on the Verizon Up program. The rewards might be small (a $5 gift card to Home Depot, for example) but it’s a nice way to offset the cost of tax or a minor purchase.
BONUS WITH PURCHASE
If you’re already planning to purchase gift cards in a large amount — $50 or more — find a deal that offers a bonus gift card with purchase. I often see these promotions at restaurants such as Panera or Chili’s, but you can find them in other businesses. Keep these bonus cards as a treat for yourself, or share them as an extra gift!

I love to receive gift cards. I tend to save them for bigger items that I really want.
I spend VISA gift cards right away but I save other gift cards to use as Christmas gifts!
We love gift cards. We use them as something comes along to the establishment that they go to. IF something is on sale at a store then I will use the gift card accordingly.
