I’m not sure why, but kids sometimes think they’re not actually “reading” if the book is a graphic novel. That’s why it’s the perfect, sneaky way to get the kids in your life to pick one up!

Visually Interesting

For children who don’t like to read chapter books, graphic novels provide a way to engage in a complex story line without committing to long 200+ pages. Graphic novels tend to cut out the fluff and get to the core of the matter. I know a lot of students (including my own daughter) who chose to read a full-length novel after exploring the story in a graphic novel. In that way, it can be a preview of the story! Illustrations help to flesh out the rest of the story’s nuances.

Less Intimidating

With smaller text groupings and a different format, graphic novels can feel less intimidating to struggling readers. In Covenant Kids, for example, the idea of a secret Christian organization is a thought-provoking topic. The presentation, though, is much less daunting than a traditional novel. It’s easier to pick one up and thumb through it in a day or two, instead of a week or month for some readers. How many adults have read the entire Old Testament? A graphic novel makes this a doable task for kids and teens.

Seems modern

Adults see graphic novels as comic books, but kids see this type of text as modern! Introduce the classics through this type of book. Since graphic novels tend to become series books, it’s also a terrific way to keep those readers wanting more. In the case of Covenant Kids, it’s clear that the story will continue. This is great news for kids!
