Disclosure: I received a copy of the book and CD to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

The days of following the lives and stories of the stars are long past for me.  I enjoy Creed’s music but honestly never knew anything about the band, not even the names of the members.  When I had the opportunity to review Sinner’s Creed by Scott Stapp, the memoir of Creed’s former lead singer, I had no idea about his background.  Since reading the book, I’ve done a bit of research and found that there were some highly publicized events in the history of the band’s breakup and the aftermath that ensued.  We rarely have a moment to watch the news and certainly never get to enjoy the guilty pleasure of celebrity gossip. Therefore I really read this book with an unbiased opinion of the author.

Looking back, I probably could do this book more justice if I had known a bit more going in.  Since there was no vested interested in the author (other than liking his music) I found myself a bit bored reading about his life’s story.  The book really wasn’t too moving of an experience.  Sadly, it reminded me of most other famous people who have that bottomed-out moment and are working their way back up.   There is a lot of sad history that scarred Stapp’s life and he responded in the typical celebrity way — cope via drugs and alcohol.  Thankfully, Stapp found God and has made a turn around.  To me, his CD Proof of Life was a much better indicator of his comeback.  The music is uplifting and beautiful.  It was refreshing that the music wasn’t just a carbon copy of his older hits.

My favorite part of the book was the middle section that included photos of Stapp with his adorable children.  Knowing a bit of his story and relating to him as a parent will help me to appreciate his music more deeply.

  1. I like Creeds music and did not know a lot about his personal life. It is always sad when people turn to alcohol and drugs to solve their problems. This book sounds interesting, and I would like to read it.

  2. I enjoyed the music, but never followed the band itself too closely. It’s nice to read a success story, though it sounds like it might resonate a bit better with real fans of the band.

  3. I like his music but dont know anything about him . Glad that he got straightened out in his life. To many famous people end up with drugs and alcohol and it ruins them. Sounds like an interesting book to read about his trials and errors .

  5. I am super interested in reading this book.
