Middle school teachers work with the underdogs every day. After all, middle school is sometimes viewed as the black hole of adolescence. When I tell someone I teach sixth grade, more often than not the person groans and offers me condolences. While I understand this mindset, I actually really like working with 11 year olds on a daily basis. They’re right in that in-between stage trying to be grown up and still actually being a child. David and Goliath was a helpful book for my profession. It was also interesting from a parent’s perspective. The message could be inspirational for those in business settings as well. This book isn’t really the normal picker-upper when it comes to facing challenges. Instead, it’s food for thought.
There were a few stories shared in this book that I could relate to. When I read the experiences of Caroline Sacks, a student who had excelled in high school then had a complete eye-opener in college, I felt that it was my own story. Then there was the story of Rick Pitino, one of my favorite coaches since the days he worked at UK. I also felt for Brian Grazer, a young man who battled dyslexia. Through these stories I gained the perspective of those who might have been seen as the underdogs. By sharing their experiences I can be a better teacher. However, I felt that the book lacked a Christian perspective. I mention it only because it might be a spiritually uplifting read, but isn’t exactly a religious book. I don’t really see it as a disadvantage, however, since it might make the book more marketable to those who aren’t interested in a Christian point of view.
sounds like a good read!

this sounds like a wonderful book that I would love to read.
What a great outlook you have–those 11 year olds are lucky to have you!! and as for the insight with the book–I think you are right on target–thanks for sharing –good way to start the new year
Aw, thanks Kathleen! I am lucky to have my job. It’s a great way to spend my day!
I really want more time so I can read. I haven’t read a book in a while and I love to read.
My sister does read a lot of Christian boos so not exactly sure if she would enjoy this one of not. I need to ask her about this one She reads every spare moment she has when not working, even more so since the loss of her youngest son.
I would like to read this one. And share it with my older grand kids.
It is funny how you won’t think a book will really speak to you, and then you are suprized at how much you relate!!
