When the kids were small, it was easy to keep them entertained. A simple cardboard box, a pack of stickers, or even a flower with a cup of water could become an adventure. As they got older, though, it took more to hold their attention. If it’s a required activity, my kids will be present in body, but not necessarily in spirit. So when I was invited to look at 52 Uncommon Family Adventures, it was welcome advice!

It’s helpful to know the 5 Love Languages when you’re going into this book. That way, you can tailor your family’s experiences to maximize their benefits. If you don’t have time to read a whole separate book, there’s a cheat sheet in this book that explains the concept!

Some of the activities in the book are no-brainers, things you probably already do at home. Others, though, will be an Aha! Moment for you. Here’s an example. Last year, my 6th grade students told me they’d never played with a Nerf ball. After I got over the initial shock, I realized that these kids grew up in the era of cell phones and iPads. It is entirely possible that no one ever put a Nerf ball in their hands. When you look at some of these ideas, consider that a pillow fight might be a totally new (and extremely fun) concept for your kids!

The activities are coded with icons that help you narrow down the effort involved. Time commitment, cost, locale (indoors or outdoors), and love language codes make it easy to determine what you can do with the extra hour before bedtime.

Each activity can be extended by using some of the tips in the book. These are great reminders that conversations need to be happening in your home. It’s not all about fun and activities. The takeaway is key; connections happen when you talk with your kids. This section also includes Bible verses that relate to the activities. If you’re not a family that focuses on the spiritual side of things, you can just skip that section.
