Growing Up Social by Gary Chapman book review

Meet my children. Or rather, the backs of their heads. Like many kids, they’ve fallen prey to the technology draw. It’s tough to admit that I have gotten used to it, too. Most days, I’d rather text or email than call someone. Amazon delivers my toilet paper so I don’t have to walk into a store. I’ve even found a way to get medical care via FaceTime.   These conveniences are all well and good until they start to interfere with my personal relationships.  Just what are my kids doing while I’m on the computer or phone?  They’re probably on a screen somewhere, too. Noah and The Promise – two books that belong on your bookshelf

Disclosure: I received the book to review; post and giveaway form contain affiliate links. Opinions shared here are 100% mine.

Will you have a few minutes to yourself to enjoy a good book over the holidays?  I sure hope so!    This wordless picture book, Noah: A Wordless Picture Book, is an incredible visual presentation of Noah’s faith.  You can actually look through the book on Amazon and I highly encourage you to do so. You won’t believe the detail and emotion in the artwork. My son enjoyed looking through this book by himself; even when I offered to read it with him, he declined. I think the beautiful illustrations so captivated him that he wanted the experience to be truly wordless. The pages are set up almost like a comic book or graphic novel. [Read more…]

#WhyDoWeCallItChristmas - DVD #giveaway ends 12/10 at savingsinseconds.com

Have you ever wondered why we call it Christmas?  In the past, my answer would have been, “Because it’s the day Jesus was born.”  Yeah, I know that the calendar probably didn’t read DECEMBER 25, AD 1 or anything.  Still, it wasn’t really clear to me why we call it Christmas.  The cute little DVD cover you see above might look benign, but there’s a whole lot of learning going on in there!  [Read more…]

A Robertson Family Christmas hardcover – book review

A Robertson Family Christmas hardcover book giveaway - enter at savingsinseconds.com by 11/24 * perfect for the Duck Dynasty fan on your list!

Mr. Savingsinseconds often channel surfs while I’m on the computer. As he scrolls through the channels, there’s a constant beeping or (even worse) profane language whenever he pauses the clicker. We don’t use that type of language in our home, and it’s disheartening to realize that there is a short list of shows we can watch as a family without hearing a swear word. Duck Dynasty is one of the few shows that we can enjoy together without concerns that the kids might walk in and overhear something inappropriate. [Read more…]

Grown up time?

Disclosure: **This post contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.

Teaching 6th grade for nearly 2 decades (ouch….it hurts to type that) has kept me young. People often comment, “Oh, I’m sorry!” or “Wow, I don’t know how you do it” when I tell them that I teach middle school.  Although that reaction usually gives me a chuckle, it’s unfounded. I really do love working with middle schoolers.  They have so much energy and emotion that it just bubbles out of them.  Sometimes that bubbling is a little too much, but there’s always another day.  There are moments, however, when I need some grown up time.  And a grown up dress, please.

When they’re babies, they think we can do it all.  Mommies make everything feel better and Daddies make everything feel fun.  Is it that way at your house, too?  My children looked at me with adoration in their eyes when they were small.  That brightness in their eyes was contagious!  As they get older, I want to show my children that they can make an impact on the world through their actions.  One way to do this is by fostering a love of learning. One way to reinforce this message is to provide your child with personalized books like I Can Change The World, the newest title from I See Me.  This high-interest book is a great way to engage the reader and make learning fun.
