Love this deal -- $32.95 SHIPPED! savingsinseconds.com

All right, people. It’s time to be honest with ourselves. Christmas is just around the corner! If you haven’t started shopping yet, don’t worry. I’m scoping out some of the best deals for you!  One of my favorite ways to save money during the holidays is to buy “package” deals that can be split up. Let’s talk about this adorable combo from Cents of Style. For only $32.95 shipped, you can get a pair of boots AND an infinity scarf! The boots alone would be at least $32 at our local shoe store, so (to me) the scarf seems like a freebie. Is that crazy talk, or does it make total sense to you? [Read more…]

My very first “real” teaching job was in a middle school. I taught Math most of the day, plus one period of Spanish class. Those were the days before Common Core and TCAP testing. Since it was the first time Spanish was taught in the middle school, I was able to develop my own curriculum and activities. It was so much fun! I loved sharing basic vocabulary words with my students. They enjoyed it, too! In the years since the Spanish year, many of those former students have told me how much they enjoyed that class. Part of the success was that I tried to make learning Spanish a fun experience.  Now, it’s obvious that this would be a great activity for a Spanish-speaking student to practice geography skills.  However, what about letting your English-speaking child play with it?  [Read more…]

Children are a gift from God

Disclosure: I received this book to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

Even in the moments of busy errands or frustrated sleeplessness, my children are best parts of my life.  Before my liver went defunct, we had our second child after years of trying to conceive.  Like many couples, we suffered a miscarriage in between the births of our two kids. Looking back on that heartbreaking event, I can’t imagine things being different. That experience meant that I was able to know my son; it’s not something I would change if given the chance.  My husband remarked to me that he would have liked to have a third child if we could have afforded it.  I was surprised by his statement because we’ve always wanted 2 kids.   Knowing that he enjoyed parenthood enough to want to do it again warmed my heart.  Sorry for the cliche, but it’s true.  Children are a gift from God.   So many children in this world are not cherished the way they deserve.  Even within my own extended family, I see children of relatives who are pushed aside or neglected in deference to cell phones, jobs, or boyfriends.  It makes me think back to a book I recently read, The Desire.

What I Read This Weekend – What Your Heart Needs for the Hard Days and Triple Knot

This weekend kicked off with a fun night at my sister’s house. The kids played while we enjoyed some fizzy Cokes and couch time. There were several funny moments! During a game of hide-and-seek, my kids passed their cousin several times as she was hiding under a blanket. Apparently they thought she was the dog curled up on the ottoman. They belly-laughed so hard when they realized what a good hiding spot she’d found! Then when the kids were getting tired, we realized that they were very quiet. Turns out they were all three hiding, waiting for the others to come find them. It’s always nice to spend time with good friends and this was a great start to a relaxing weekend.

My quiet time is usually punctuated with a good book. [Read more…]

Dolphin Tale 2 coming to theaters September 12

“Disclosure (in accordance with the FTC’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”): Many thanks to Propeller Consulting, LLC for providing this prize for the giveaway. Choice of winners and opinions are 100% my own and NOT influenced by monetary compensation. I did receive a sample of the product in exchange for this review and post.

Mark your calendar – Dolphin Tale 2 is coming out on September 12! My kids have already been asking to go see the movie. I can’t blame them for wanting to go. It looks amazing! Everyone loves a happy ending, and Winter definitely warmed our hearts in 2011. This sequel takes place several years after the dedicated team at the Clearwater Marine Hospital rescued Winter. Remember how Dr. Cameron McCarthy developed a unique prosthetic tail for the injured dolphin? Saving her life was just the first part of the journey! According to USDA regulations, Winter cannot be housed alone, as dolphins’ social behavior requires them to be paired with other dolphins. When Winter’s surrogate mother passes away, Winter’s grief is increased by the fact that she may be lost to another aquarium. The film celebrates a reunion of the original cast, including Harry Connick Jr., Oscar winner Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, and Kris Kristofferson. Also, Bethany Hamilton makes an appearance!

How to get your husband to mop the floor

How to get your husband to mop the floor -- Shark steam and mop at savingsinseconds.com
It’s long been decided that between the two of us, my husband is the better housekeeper. He is non-sentimental, ruthlessly throwing away things I try to hoard. Resourceful and clever, he finds ingenious ways to clean behind and between appliances or furniture. Somehow he gets the cleaning finished way faster than I ever do; we call it the “Quick Clean” because it’s often necessary before we have a friend over! Unfortunately we don’t seem to get that Quick Clean accomplished very often. This week, however, I figured out how to get him to mop the floor on demand. Ladies, watch and learn.

Enter the Shark Steam and Spray. [Read more…]

A beautiful butterfly

A beautiful butterfly savingsinseconds.com Tonight I looked back on some old pictures that were saved on my computer. Oh, the days when my babies were small! I found this picture of a caterpillar we “raised” and released. It was such a neat experience to watch the cocoon reveal its hidden treasure. When the butterfly was finally ready to be set free, we checked on it for a couple of days before it finally took flight. It reminded me of the Eric Carle book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Both of my kids loved that book — we had the BIG board book with gigantic holes on the day that the caterpillar really fills up. [Read more…]

Home-to-Chicory-Lane-PK

It was a busy weekend full of family and fun.  Somewhere in the down times, I squeezed in a few pages of reading.  This weekend I finished The Old Man And The Sea, Home to Chicory Lane, AHA, and Mindwar.  There is no rhyme or reason to the books I pick up but they each take me to a different world.  Believe me, these books are as different from each other as can be! You can purchase Home to Chicory Lane  and Mindwar at Family Christian and other retailers. [Read more…]
