Dress-Up Play for boys – today it’s a police costume!

It’s been a long time since my daughter played dress-up.  In fact, the last time I remember her wearing a costume was when her baby brother was born. She arrived at the hospital on her 5th birthday, which also happened to be Easter morning, wearing her Tinkerbell dress.  Apparently, part of the beauty of getting to stay with Grandma when your baby brother is born is that you can wear dress-up clothes.  Gotta love it!

Questions that so many teens wonder about

When my husband and I taught Sunday School, we often worked with the high school class.  Sometimes we took them to Burger King to enjoy a sausage biscuit while we had a discussion-style lesson.  Those mornings were some of the best opportunities to talk with the teens about questions that they really wanted to explore.  We always encouraged them to discuss issues with their parents; meanwhile, we tried our best to give God’s answers to those questions by using the Bible as our reference.   When teens wonder about something, it’s not unlike a toddler’s curiosity.  They’re bound to explore those questions in some fashion.  That’s why it’s so important to have those critical conversations with your child!  [Read more…]

The Red, The White, and The Blue

Hindsight is kicking my rear end today.  I hate having to say, “I should have listened to you.” With my husband who seems to be the prognosticator of prognosticators, I end up saying it a lot.  Here’s the newest thing.

So we moved into this house when the baby above was just a bean — almost 11 years ago.  It wasn’t my “forever house” at the time but it’s slowly becoming so.  We’ve done a lot of great things to the house, such as install hardwood floors throughout and we also put in a pool.  Six months ago, my dear sweet husband told me we needed to start thinking about getting a new heat pump.  Oh, how I fought this.  Ours was still ticking and we had no major concerns on the horizon.  We also didn’t have $5K+ to shell out for something new so I kissed my knuckles and rolled the dice.   [Read more…]

What I wish I’d never said to my daughter

There are many things I love about my daughter getting a bit older.  She’s 10 years old now and starting to take an interest in fashion.  As she develops her own personal style, she’s starting to enjoy looking for items that allow her to put her personality out there.  She is fun to be with and hilarious to talk with.  I’m excited that she’s not only my daughter, but now also my friend.  Gone are the days when I had to bend down to hold her hand.  Soon I’ll be looking up to talk with her!   She was a tiny little preemie, not much bigger than an American Girl doll, and it is hard to believe that she’s as tall as I am.

Always my little girl

Do you shop ahead for back-to-school clothes?

I know, I know.  It’s a bit early to be thinking about the new school year.  It’s just that I’m trying to clean out my daughter’s closet today (while she’s away at camp) and I’m procrastinating, so this topic came to mind.  When she was a baby, I used to stock up on the next season’s clothes when shopping at consignment sales or yard sales.  It was easy to wash them up, toss them in a storage bin, and have an entire wardrobe ready to pull out in early summer.  Then one year that habit came back to bite me when she skipped an entire size, having gone through an unpredictable growth spurt.  Now that my daughter is 10 years old and wearing larger shoes than mine, I am hesitant to buy a lot of clothes for school on the off-chance that they might fit her by then.   [Read more…]

Kernel Season’s can shake up your flavor – Savory Summer giveaway hop

Disclosure: I received product samples; the opinions shared are 100% mine.

Savings in Seconds is excited to partner with Kernel Season’s for this giveaway event.

During the summer, my day often revolves around my children’s meals and snacks.  While it’s improved somewhat since they were babies, it seems that we’re still in that pattern.  We are often running errands or playing outside until the kids realize they’re ravenous and they want a snack NOW.  Or 5 minutes ago.  So it’s important for me to have snacks that can be quickly prepared that still satisfy their cravings.  Kernel Season’s sent me this lifesaver kit that has been used several times in my kitchen already!  We received an air popper and an assortment of popcorn seasonings.  We already had a can of popcorn in our pantry, so we immediately set out to try the flavors. Enter to win 2 sets of canning labels from @LovableLabels - savingsinseconds.com

Our sponsor for this giveaway is Lovable Labels.

We grow several varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash in our small garden.  While we’ve always loved fresh garden goodness, I really want to learn to can these items for the winter months.   It’s also fun to make strawberry freezer jam with the kids, then give away those containers at Christmas.  For those of you who use your homegrown produce to create kitchen masterpieces, you can kick up those jars a notch by using these beautiful custom labels.  The best part is, the jars can be gifted again and again because these labels happily go in the dishwasher, freezer, fridge, or even the microwave. Forever Amish by Kate Lloyd book review

Disclosure: I received this book to review. The opinions shared here are 100% mine.

Enter to win a copy of Forever Amish by Kate Lloyd - thanks to @Litfuse #giveaway savingsinseconds.com

This book had an interesting blend of the Englisch world and Amish beliefs.  The main character, Mustang Sally, had a lot of personal issues to work through.   She was a hard character for me to like.  Although she was 27 years old, she behaved like a teenager in many ways.  She was a caretaker for her father which I appreciated; however, she threw mini temper tantrums and had a wishy-washy personality.  She drove me crazy yet I had to find out what happened with her!  Forever Amish sends a great message about the connectedness of family.
