Swing by Kwame Alexander @theffbc #BLINKSummerReading19 @BlinkYABooks

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. Opinions shared are mine.

You might remember last week’s Meet the Sky post. I feel super lucky because I was selected for a second book in the Blink Summer Reading Tour! Big thanks to the publisher and Fantastic Flying Book Club for the chance to read Swing by Kwame Alexander. Another big thanks to Kwame for writing books that my students are excited to read! Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book.

I was introduced to Kwame Alexander’s books last school year when Booked was posted as a summer reading choice for my students. The unusual text format stood out as a unique feature, and the compelling character backstory made it a popular option for middle school readers. Swing has a similar draw, pulling in students with athletic interests and typical teen issues of crushes, tryouts, and friendship.

I love that Swing encourages readers to think differently about books. Conversations aren’t common in poetry (at least, not any that I’ve read!) yet it has a natural place in Swing. Instead of reading in stop-and-start paragraphs and chapters, the stanzas generate a fluid motion throughout the story.

Swing by Kwame Alexander with Mary Rand Hess

Publisher: BLINK

Release Date: October 2, 2018

Genres: Young Adult Fiction — Poetry, Realistic Fiction, Sports

SYNOPSIS:

Things usually do not go as planned for seventeen-year-old Noah. He and his best friend Walt (aka Swing) have been cut from the high school baseball team for the third year in a row, and it looks like Noah’s love interest since third grade, Sam, will never take it past the “best friend” zone. Noah would love to retire his bat and accept the status quo, but Walt has big plans for them both, which include making the best baseball comeback ever, getting the girl, and finally finding cool.

To go from lovelorn to ladies’ men, Walt introduces Noah to a relationship guru—his Dairy Queen-employed cousin, Floyd—and the always informative Woohoo Woman Podcast. Noah is reluctant, but decides fate may be intervening when he discovers more than just his mom’s birthday gift at the thrift shop. Inside the vintage Keepall is a gold mine of love letters from the 1960s. Walt is sure these letters and the podcasts are just what Noah needs to communicate his true feelings to Sam. To Noah, the letters are more: an initiation to the curious rhythms of love and jazz, as well as a way for him and Walt to embrace their own kind of cool. While Walt is hitting balls out of the park and catching the eye of the baseball coach, Noah composes anonymous love letters to Sam in an attempt to write his way into her heart. But as things are looking up for Noah and Walt, a chain of events alters everything Noah knows to be true about love, friendship, sacrifice, and fate.

In Swing, bestselling authors Kwame Alexander and Mary Rand Hess (Solo) present a free-verse poetic story that will speak to anyone who’s struggled to find their voice and take a swing at life.

Meet the Sky by McCall Hoyle @theffbc #BLINKSummerReading19 @BlinkYABooks

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. Opinions shared are mine.

Books for middle grades and teens are just so important. Adolescence is that armpit of life that sometimes stinks, feels uncomfortable, and always makes you feel self-conscious. Characters in books like those found in the Blink Summer Reading Tour can help with that issue. These characters are mirrors for young people; their experiences might be found in print, but they still encourage readers to think and consider and empathize. I’m so excited to participate in this tour! I had the chance to read Meet the Sky by McCall Hoyle.

Out of the Darkness by Debra Holz

Disclosure: I received a book for review. Opinions shared are mine.

I have been ill with strep throat for the past few days, and am finally rising out of my sickbed to be able to post today. Crazy how long it takes me to recover now that I’m hitting the almost-50 mark. I hope all of you are doing well! Today my post is about the book Out of the Darkness by Debra Holz. Although this book is about depression, I find that my “darkness” is more often caused by anxiety. The two regularly go hand in hand, and it’s a calamity many people struggle with.

Cold Light of Day by Elizabeth Goddard

Disclosure: I received a free book in exchange for a review. Opinions shared are mine.

Well, those 2 months went by really fast! It’s wrestling season so we’re capital-B-BUSY around here. I’ve spent lots of time in the car, shuffling my son from one activity to the next. Luckily, sitting through practices and tournaments means that I get plenty of chances to read! My newest book to feature is Cold Light of Day by Elizabeth Goddard.

Edge of Dusk by Colleen Coble #giveaway

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book for review. Opinions shared are mine.

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you might have noticed that I participate in fewer book tours than in the past. I’m much more protective of my time these days, and only agree to review books that I am excited to read. When books from a favorite author like Colleen Coble come up, I have more time available to devote. As soon as Edge of Dusk came on my radar, I was sending the “Yes, please!”

None Without Sin by Michael Bradley #giveaway

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book for review. Opinions shared are mine.

Have the summer days been good to you? I sure hope so! We’ve enjoyed many sunny memory-making moments this June. This week I sat out under the canopy and read None Without Sin by Michael Bradley. It reminded me about an old practice I once read about in a book called Sin Eater.

Exit Strategy by Linda L. Richards + #giveaway

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book for review. Opinions shared are mine.

Overall, I liked this book. The idea of an unnamed main character (and an unnamed sweet dog) was new to me. The world of business, stock market, and corporate dealings is also out of my realm, so I felt a bit like a fish out of water while reading this. There were a few parts that didn’t completely make sense because I didn’t read the first one. Enough information is provided to give a bit of a backstory, though. There’s a lot of action in Exit Strategy. The protagonist plays a high-stakes game and that adds some intensity to the story.

Paradise Cove by Davin Goodwin

Disclosure: I received a book for review. Opinions shared are mine.

Take a few hours to sink into the island life with Paradise Cove! Watch your back, though; Bonaire is not as peaceful as you might think. Author Davin Goodwin sets the stage with a murder mystery that plays out almost as if it’s on the big screen.
