Teaching reading is only as fun as the reading material I get to share with my students!  Fortunately, there are so many great options for series and themed books.   Every year, I ask students to complete an end-of-year survey about the books they’ve read.  Time and again the students tell me that the #1 factor in choosing a book is teacher recommendation, followed by a friend’s suggestion.  That is a huge responsibility, people!   I take it seriously, trying to stay current in middle grade and teen fiction.  When author Andrew Connell reached out to share his Sean Livingstone series, I had to check it out.

My experience with the great outdoors, for the most part, is limited to places where full-hookup campsites are available.  Glamping is definitely my style of roughing it.  When reading Leave No Trace by Mindy Mejia (release date 9/4/18) , I felt like I was under the stars in frigid Minnesota!

Hydro by A.C. Waltower — book review

Disclosure: I received this book to review. Opinions shared here are 100% mine.

Hydro book review Remember when Y2K was the big scare? There may or may not have been some water bottles and flashlights stockpiled in my attic. Then we had the whole Mayan calendar debacle of 2012. Hydro has the same end-of-the-world feel except this time we’re playing around on the moon after a nuclear war devastates Earth in 2016. With a male/female counterpart that feels almost familiar at this point, we get to explore the realism of a dual world in shambles.  Overall, I’d give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars.  It’s always fun to find a new YA book to love. Hydro will appeal to readers who like fast-paced, thrilling science fiction novels with potential for an addictive series.

Happy Mother’s Day – to all the women out there!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you out there!  As I’ve said many times, giving birth does not qualify one to earn the congratulations for mother’s day.  Being a mother is so much more than that.  Women who have never borne a child are still mothers when they offer love, nourishment, or compassion on one of God’s creatures.  I’ve also known some mothers who had their kids yet possess the maternal instincts of a grasshopper.  So girls, today we all celebrate the moms who give of their hearts and souls to nurture their kids.  Let’s especially remember those women for whom Mother’s Day might bring a moment of sadness, whether they’ve lost a mother or they have had struggles with motherhood.   [Read more…]
