Jesus Calling My First Bible Storybook review

Disclosure: I received this book as part of the Tommy Mommy Program. The opinions shared are mine.

There are only a few things that my kids remember from their earliest years.  Pets, favorite toys, and beloved books rank at the top of the list.  We have books that were finally discarded because they were torn from their covered, taped until every page was slick with cellophane.  It’s hard to imagine a more powerful tool than reading with a child.  After all, it’s a practice that they’ll do for the rest of their lives. Starting early is so important!   I loved sharing Bible stories with my children.  If you have little ones, Jesus Calling My First Bible Storybook by Sarah Young would be a wonderful gift to share.

Jesus Calling giveaway at savingsinseconds.com -- thanks to sponsor @TommyNelson

A few years ago, my dear friend Alana gave me a copy of the Jesus Calling devotional. Since then, I’ve purchased it several times as gifts for others.   What makes this devotional series different for me is the beautiful, personal way in which author Sarah Young presents the love of Jesus.  These gentle words bring peace, comfort, and healing to a tired soul.  These daily passages are very direct in sharing God’s love. 101 Things Every Girl Should Know book review + Believe Kids Edition and Jesus Calling for Little Ones

Have your kids stopped reaching for books on the shelf because there isn’t anything new there? Here are some fresh titles to read with your kids this weekend!

My daughter is headed into 6th grade this fall, and her tweenness might just be the end of me. I’ve taught 6th grade for 18 years, and I can safely say that the grass is NOT greener on the parental side.  The book 101 Things Every Girl Should Know might just save me from this angst. Each chapter is *just* long enough to keep a tween’s attention without being preachy, but also gives the perfect dose of essential information.  I love that the topics are perfectly balanced for a girl’s lifestyle. From dealing with Aunt Flo to baking a chicken (no kidding), girls are going to appreciate this resource. Each full-color page is visually stimulating, too.

Jesus Calling -- the devotional you need. savingsinseconds.com #ad

This school year started out in a very hectic way. I moved classrooms, subject areas, and teams.  Stepping out of my comfort zone and needing to trust my colleagues to help me through was a tough move for me.  It wasn’t my choice to move but I love my school so I was willing to go where God led me.  There were days in August and September that I wasn’t sure what in the world I was doing.  Feeling overwhelmed and discouraged, my heart cried out for help.  I was so lucky to have this wonderful devotional right on my bookshelf.  Jesus Calling was a balm for my weary soul. Jesus Always : 365 Devotions for Kids by Sarah Young

During my college years, long devotional workbooks filled with reflection questions and application challenges appealed to me.  It was a time of deep faith and I look back on those days with a longing to get back in that place.  In this season of my life, I prefer short devotionals that give me a target on which to focus for the day.  It feels like an accomplishment when I can start with a moment of prayer or a bit of worship-mindedness.  Even though Jesus Always is meant for a young audience, it’s actually perfect for my morning!

Jesus Today #giveaway - enter at savingsinseconds.com

I’m a big fan of the Jesus Calling books.  I have given away copy after copy to friends and family. The book just speaks to me, and makes me feel so comforted on tough days.  When Jesus Today came out, I knew they’d love this one.  Although it’s geared to kids ages 6-10, I find myself being uplifted through each daily message as well.  It makes our family’s devotion time very special.  It’s important, though, to let kids know that these are not actually scriptural messages.  Instead, they’re from the imagination of the author Sarah Young. The daily devotionals reflect her thoughts spent in prayer.  The take-away is lovely, and feels like a God Hug! It’s one of our new favorites, and I hope you’ll enjoy it as well.

Thanks to Tommy Nelson, one lucky reader will receive a copy of this lovely devotional.  Keep it as a gift, or share it with a special little one in your home.  The giveaway is open to US readers ages 18+. Void where prohibited by law. Good luck!

A Son’s Vow by Shelley Shepard Gray and Jesus Today by Sarah Young – book review

Disclosure: I received books to review; post contains affiliate links. Opinions shared are mine.

As you ponder what to read this weekend, consider these books. I enjoyed them very much!

A Son’s Vow by Shelley Shepard Gray  has the elements of a great drama without all the extra mumbo-jumbo.  At the heart of the story is a deep tragedy — the explosion at a local mill that killed five men from the Charm community.  Devastated, two young friends (Darla and Lukas) must figure out how to move on with life.  It’s a tearjerker in the making, and there’s a clear hope of more to come. The book, the first in the series, seemed quite short despite its  288 pages.  I felt like the story just flew by  me.   A Son's Vow review at savingsinseconds.com [Read more…]

Behind the Red Door by Megan Collins @AtriaBooks @MeganCollinsWriter

Welcome to my first post in MONTHS! You guys, I seriously didn’t think I’d ever be able to log on to Savings in Seconds again. We moved at the end of July, and then in early August my site went down. It was completely out of commission, and even HostGator was baffled. After many, many live chats and emails, they somehow worked a miracle and got it working again. I still couldn’t log in though — until now. Ironically, the tech who finally fixed it for me was named Jesus. I’m so glad to be back online and hoping to get caught up on all the posts I missed while I was locked out. One of the posts I missed was this blog tour for Behind the Red Door by Megan Collins.

A Cross to Kill by Andrew Huff * Author Interview * Kregel Publications

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book for the blog tour. Opinions shared are mine.

Suspense and thriller novels are my current fave, so I’m always looking for the next best one. A Cross to Kill has a starkly contrasted cover that drew my curiosity right away. Forget writing out Christmas cards. Reading is far more interesting.
