There are some books that just need to be carried around in your purse waiting for those moments you’re just sitting around doing nothing. This is one of them. While not exactly intellectually stimulating, Harriet Beamer Strikes Gold is the kind of book you need to read while sitting in the waiting room of the dentist’s office. You’ll lose yourself in the funny yet unrealistic moments of the book. Since this is a Christian novel, it’s good clean fun that reminded me not to take life too seriously.  Admittedly, I read the author’s bio and it occurred to me that she might be a Harriet-in-waiting.  After all, she has an eighty year old onion plant.  What’s that all about?!

Harriet loosely reminded me of my grandmother.  My “Oba”, as I call her, is in her eighties and nothing keeps her down.  For years she traveled all over the country with Bible Bowl tournaments.  When I was a teenager, she was the Bible Bowl coach at church.  She fearlessly took a group of us teenagers to various conventions all by herself.  I cannot imagine doing that today, much less when I’m a grandmother!!  Now that she’s in her eighties she is staying closer to home but I can still see the light behind her eyes.  She’s active on Facebook and still works on her crossword puzzles.  In fact, when I visited her a couple of weeks ago, she surprised me by asking for a clue from Harry Potter.  While she’s a bit more reserved than Harriet, my grandmother is the kind of lady I want to be when I’m in my thirties for the fourth decade in a row.  Harriet has a thirst for adventure and isn’t afraid to take risks.  That’s a good quality at any age, in my opinion!  Harriet Beamer Strikes Gold is a book I will pass along to my grandmother, along with a note to thank her for being such a fun and carefree inspiration.
