On My (Kids’) Bookshelf: Bedtime Stories and Prayers

My daughter slept in her own bed from the first night she came home.  Now, she’s been in our bed a few times, but usually she sleeps by herself.  Then my son came along.  He is the stealth bomber of sleeping in someone else’s bed.  He’s so good at sneaking in that I don’t usually even know he’s there until I wake up in the morning.  We received this book to review and it’s become a regular in our bedtime story rotation.  Even though it doesn’t stop the kiddos from crawling into our bed, it does help to make the nighttime routine a bit easier.  Every child is different and I have come to learn that the hard way.  My daughter craved a bedtime story every single night, while my son rarely sits still long enough to enjoy an entire book.  It was maddening to try to fight him to sit on my lap through an entire book.  That’s why I really love Bedtime Stories and Prayers.  We can choose to read something short, or if he’s really in a cuddly mood we might read the whole thing.   The gentle message of God’s love is a soothing comfort to a little one who is about to drift off to sleep.  Reading this together is like saying a prayer together.

Bedtime Stories and Prayers is also easy for little hands to hold.  If you have a Memorizer at your house (the child who wants to memorize the story page-by-page) this is a good one to read.  The stories are short enough that they can be finished within a few minutes.   You’ll even have enough time left for the encore presentation if you have a “Read It Again Mommy” child like mine.   No matter what, these are the moments you’ll hold within your heart long after your children have grown.  Enjoy Bedtime Stories and Prayers, moms!

Do you have a nighttime routine that includes reading a bedtime story?

  1. Yes! I read my girls a story every night before bed – it’s a huge part of our routine and they love it! I’ll have to check out this book…my oldest is a memorizer and would probably like this.

  2. My kids also love to read bedtime stories. Thank you for sharing this book.

  6. My kids were also difficult at bedtime stories. They never let me read to them. It has gotten better as they got older. And then my daughter got into a phase where she wouldn’t go to bed without a story and I loved it. Now she is back to not letting me read to her and I really miss it! I Don’t know why she changed her mind.

  7. We read to our kids every night. Even my son, who is 10, enjoys being read to. We help him work through larger books by taking a turn at bedtime and he reads other parts during the day.
