Focus on the Family is known for its parenting guides and spiritual encouragement.  Did you know they also provide excellent reading material for kids?  The Young Whit series is part of the larger world of Odyssey.

I just love the way this book looks.  It’s a bit smaller than many books of this category, so it will especially attract the attention of reluctant readers.  The mysterious cover has the interesting look of an old journal.  Inside the front cover, readers will find a map of Great Depression-era Provenance, North Carolina.  I just love books with maps!

The book contains many topics that modern kids will relate to.  Death of a parent, adjusting to a move, and learning how to interact with new friends (including a bully).  Intelligent and curious, Johnny is nearly 10 years old.  The story is quite appropriate for kids in later elementary school, yet there’s an innocence about it that makes it just right for younger children, too.

My son absolutely loves history, so Young Whit already appealed to him.  I love that the characters mention classic books, too.  This is the perfect book to pair with a couple of Sherlock Holmes titles to give as a gift!  Look for the abridged, illustrated versions for kids who want to know the basics but prefer something shorter.

Since this is an Odyssey title, there is an element of Christian faith in this story. It’s not heavy handed, and it leaves a good opening for a family discussion.  The history and adventure compose the main storyline.  Consider this book as part of a homeschool study, or as an elementary Sunday School book club!
