Ask any frugal person about books and they’ll usually suggest going to the library. After all, free is always better than paying money, right? In my case, I was paying the library to borrow books. The universe conspired against me every time, ensuring my returns would be well past the due date. Considering we always tend to borrow a boatload of books at a time, the late fines really added up! This summer, my kids have been going through books like crazy, so I decided to swallow my pride and pay my debts at the library. Libraries. Since we have cards at several! Feeling like a new woman, of course I had to look at the shelves and came away with way too many titles (surprise, surprise.) However, I’ve finally figured out how to renew online. Fitting rooms are a thing of the past for me. A solo trip to a clothing store happens about as often as spotting Big Foot. Having enough time to try on multiple garments? Ha ha. The past two weeks have been a crazy whirlwind for our family. My husband had a scheduled surgery on Monday, but the complications sent him back to the hospital TWICE after the initial discharge. We’ve spent 8 out of the past 10 days in the hospital. Now that we’re home and he’s doing a bit better, I’m hoping that I can take the kids on a much-deserved trip to the pool. A few years ago, there was such a buzz over the book Heaven is for Real. I also read Don Piper’s 90 Minutes in Heaven. Both stories were profoundly inspiring. So much controversy rests on the subject of the afterlife, and it’s interesting to read different accounts of people’s experiences. Bill Weise has quite a different story to share, though, in his book 23 Minutes in Hell.

It’s really hard to know where to start with The Roanoke Girls. It just doesn’t follow any of the typical rules for a novel, so it seems unfair to give it a typical review. Author Amy Engel’s first book for adults was stunning in a Gone Girl shocking kind of way. What attracted me to this book was the simple formula…..dysfunctional family+ small town mystery.
