Imagine Disney Land — or Disney World, if that’s your thing. Listen to the music, see the parades, and enjoy the rides in your mind. Now, turn that entire vision into Monsterland. That’s right, monsters. Zombies, vampires, werewolves…..even the token hunchback. This urban fantasy trespasses into the horror subgenre in a sinister way. Ready for a shiver?
Normally I prefer my vampires to be the genteel, vegetarian sort of man. In Monsterland, however, there are no such species. The fantasy comes dangerously close to reality when author Michael Phillip Cash describes a world where viruses mutated, causing a large percentage of the population to fall prey to illness. While there seems to be a hierarchy of sorts when it comes to the monsters, there’s one thing for certain. They’re all dangerous! Creepy scientist Vincent Conrad created Monsterland to bring the monsters one step closer to civilization, but is it a good thing?
The slim paperback is deceptive at first. I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy the premise, nor did I anticipate how much I would love the characters. The imagery in the early chapters had me from the start. Cash has a way with words that I didn’t expect to find in a book with the Monsterland theme. Carter and Wyatt were my favorite characters, but there were so many other secondary characters who found a way into my heart. There was more hard profanity than necessary, but that doesn’t bother most readers as much as it does for me. The story stopped at a big cliffhanger, so I really hope to read a sequel soon!
