STEAM is a hot buzz word in education these days. The acronym stands for science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Making Inventive Wooden Toys offers over 30 ideas for creative projects utilizing STEAM ideas.
The projects in this book require common items such as rubberbands and pencils. However, other necessary tools must be available including drills, saws, and the like. If you gift this book to a mechanical-minded teen, consider including a few of the tools needed for a project or two. The recipient can try a project, and if inspired, may add to the tool collection over time.
These activities seemed to be geared toward those experienced in putting things together. Keep in mind that I’m not a very handy person, so I might be in the minority here.
Complicated measurements are well-illustrated, and the science behind each activity is thoroughly described. There’s a great deal of reading involved, so the younger crew may need assistance with vocabulary. Words like “beveling” and “countersunk” aren’t in most people’s everyday vocabulary! Adults will also need help with handling the tools for the projects.
One lucky Savings in Seconds reader will win a copy of Making Inventive Wooden Toys! The giveaway is open to US readers ages 18+. Void where prohibited by law. Enter on the form below. Good luck!
