The Amish of Hart County follows characters living in Horse Cave, Kentucky — which is a real place. Each of the books is standalone, but they have common characters and interrelated events. Though I’ve read some of the other books in this series, His Risk was my favorite so far.
In this series, author Shelley Shepard Gray explores hot topics that most Amish fiction doesn’t mention. Instead of living completely separate lives, the characters in Horse Cave tend to interact with the English quite often. In this case, I almost forgot that two of the main characters, Alice and Irene, were Amish! They worked traditional jobs — Alice as a preschool teacher, Irene as a waitress — and there wasn’t much mention of their Plain living practices. In fact, there were only two constant characters (Calvin and West) who were English, but it seemed like they had such a dominant presence.
His Guilt is rather unrealistic, considering some of the events that take place and how the characters react. The book mentions gang activity in nearby Louisville and Cincinnati. Since I grew up near Louisville, I enjoyed reading about this area. There was a surprising lack of faith-based content in this story. Still, it’s nice to see something more gritty than the typical Amish story.
